TwitterWhen animals considered to be "prey" by the apex predators of the world begin to band together for safety, where does it leave those caught in between?
Namely, a pair of pine martens, carnivores and flesh-eaters themselves, but small enough to be considered food for the bears, wolves and gluttons of the forest and field. They're on a journey to seek sanctuary with the rabbits, squirrels and other prey that have gathered to Oren--but they don't know if welcome or condemnation will meet them.

Everything she’s threatened, everything she’s said, everything she’s planned, yet this is how she reacts to what she saw.
Perhaps she’s shocked by how easily Sprig was killed, despite being armed? Seeing someone who was initially so meek suddenly explode, to their benefit? Was she actually close to Sprig, and his death is hitting her hard? Or had she not actually fought a full-grown predator? Saw someone say a few pages back that the skin she’s wearing is from a cub.
Perhaps she’s shocked by how easily Sprig was killed, despite being armed? Seeing someone who was initially so meek suddenly explode, to their benefit? Was she actually close to Sprig, and his death is hitting her hard? Or had she not actually fought a full-grown predator? Saw someone say a few pages back that the skin she’s wearing is from a cub.
The fear in Hemlock's eyes in a way is golden.
And I think I at last realized what makes her so fearful when before she was so fearless.
She never fought or protected against a medium predator. She only fights against the Apex ones like the wolfs and cougars (if I guess correctly that she killed those and is not just boasting). She always had agility against their bigger mass.
But Martens are just as nimble and flexible as she and for the first time she realizes that Rask could have killed her if he so choose at any given moment even with her weapon.

Martens, minks, ferrets all hunt rabbits primarily. She would stand no chance, and her only hope of winning would be that Rask was starving, but that would only serve to make him more desperate. She stands no chance against her kind's death.
Pound for pound, if weasels were the size of wolves or lions, they would kill every living thing on Earth in a week. Mustelids are perfect killing machines, limited only by their size. Go watch a video of Amazonian River Otters hunting. It's scary.

I love how you've changed Hemlocks expression from prejudicial confidence to her fearful realisation. The panels here have the flow of the ferocious scuffle which is enhanced their intense expression. I like how you use the red background to show the depth of the emotion that Rask is having to dig into fighting his own Dad.
The possibilities of how this could turn out really make this series so enticing. Hemlock could come to the rescue or wait till both are tired out and attack both while no one else can witness what happens.
