Legends say that the Guardians of Great Houses and Temples in the mountains and even those hidden in the seas of sand pay a great price for their strength. You see, each cub born into the caste must prove themselves worthy by taking that power from a dragon. It seems almost that after cutting their adult fangs, they venture forth to find the celestial being they will forever be bound to. A fight begins and might wage for days, neither side resting until either the dragon is bested or the dog dies. If the newly named Guardian wins, it is said that this warrior is given the Spirit Orb of the dragon to hold for all of their days in the form of a stone 'round their neck. In times of great need, the Guardian may call upon some of the Celestial's power, but all of this comes at great cost. Once dead, the Guardian does not pass onto the true afterlife but wanders the lands, the In Between, as a hungry ghost...knowing neither family nor friend. No, the only being he or she shall know is the dragon they are bound to if that creature sees fit to come find them to be reborn in an effort to, in the next life, take their Spirit Orb...their freedom...back permanently.
The Guardian pledges their very blood to either a Great House or a Temple and protects it with the measure of all of their days. Never has one broken that contract until Samaya, The Breaker of Oaths.
So this is Samaya who is a new character in a new feral realm that I'm developing. She's a Tibetan Mastiff/wolf mix. She's fairly reserved but supremely confident in her abilities but will be faced with figuring out how strong she really is when the noble house she serves is no longer so noble, and she sets out on a journey to make sure a needless war and the carnage that follows does not happen.
