Deki Deki was a humanoid type Saucer Beast that serve as the monster of the week in Ep.49 of the Grendizer Anime and the 52nd Monster overall in the show: this episode also marked the introduction of Maria Fleed into the series.
Deki Deki resembled a medieval knight that had a blue, black, green purple and gray color scheme; it sport a large blade on top of its head and its only weapons were the massive blades it held in its hands, which were also the shells for its Saucer Mode. Its vehicle form was a standard flat disk with really sharp edges, able to cut through any material in its path and it is impervious to any form of projectile attack as well emit a Vegatron energy field around it.
Deki Deki appears right at the start of the episode, when massive explosion of Vegatron Bombs rips through its hangar while been loaded onto the Beast; Deki survives, however its control mechanism goes haywire and takes off to Earth at its own accord, disregarding the commands of its masters. On its way, it cuts through an Earthling rocket and various asteroids with its sharp edges with its erratic flight. The beast is detected and Grendizer takes off to confront it: on its arrival it crashes onto a ship and then attacks a city, ripping through the buildings.
Elsewhere, a young female biker (Maria) wins a race with her friends, when Deki flies by and damages her home; her uncle (unnamed) tries to fight off the beast with a laser gun and it wound grievously by the flying debris of the beast fast flybys, he sees Grendizer flying by. Maria arrives and takes her dying Uncle to bed, where he explains to her niece of her true identity, her dead royal family and Grendizer, explaining her necklace is the proof (a similar one held by Duke) revealing her full name been Grace Maria Fleed.
As Grendizer continues the fight with Deki Deki, Duke discovers it is contaminated by Vegatron Radiation; he is taken down by a ram attack from Deki and crashes, falling unconscious, though the Beast doesn't finish him off due to its out of control state and continues to flies off all over the region. Koji and Hikaru fly to search for Grendizer on the Double and Marine Spazers, which takes them until morning; by then, the "Uncle" having finished his story, begs Maria to defeat the Pilot and reclaim Grendizer to avenge the extinct people of Fleed (confusing Duke with a Vega Agent and likely thinking Grendizer is the one who attacked them). He then informs her necklace also serves as a tracking device that pin points the exact location of Grendizer and he dies. Afterwards, Maria buries him, and takes off with his sword and laser gun to uphold her Uncle's dying wish.
Side Note 1: Heads up, people - THIS IS GOING TO BE THE MAJOR GRIPES I WILL HAVE WITH THIS EPISODE! So incoming rant in the end!
Koji and Hikaru find Grendizer as Duke wakes up and they fly to search for the beast, flying over Maria who follows them, confusing even the Spazer Pilots as Vega too.
Deki reappears and attacks a refinery when Team Grendizer arrives, Koji goes to attack Deki; the Beast responds by throwing its blade, missing him, but Koji fills the sting of the Vegatron Radiation emitting from its hull. Duke suggest to drag him underground to control its movement, and Koji returns to base to get the Drill Spazer; Grendizer and Marine Spazer attack the beast who then follows them to a safer depopulated place to contain it. Koji takes off on the Drill Spazer and arrives as the beast lands in a valley; Grendizer connects with the Driller and proceeds with the plan; They dig their way into the ground and weaken the soil under the beast, creating a sinkhole that traps it, Hikaru fire her Marine missiles to block its escape as a barrage of Driller Missiles are fired at Deki from below, causing greater damage to his body. Deki exist the sink hole as Grendizer comes out for the final attack, damaging it further with Space Thunder and Screw Punch, and dispatching it with Double Harken as the beast attempted to escape.
After the battle, the trio is back at base and Koji expresses for the need of another pilot to make the matter of getting the Spazers more easily, and at that moment, Maria breaks in and attacks. Duke takes notice of her necklace and demands to know who she is; she identifies herself and demands Grendizer. A shock Duke lowers his guard, allowing Maria to swipe his shirt with the sword, revealing his necklace, shocking Maria. Duke identifies himself as her brother and the siblings embrace each other for the first time in years. The emotional reunion has both Hikaru and Koji in tears (the latter more so understandably, likely thinking of his little brother, Shiro, who he hasn't seen in years).
Side Note 2: Now for the fun part lol – ZE RANT, and is quite a read!!!
The Whole Maria Plot is essentially derailed by the main Deki Plot, which takes full center stage - after all, it is about an out of control beast running lose and naturally this will overshadow any secondary plot you could write in. Thus this does not allow any major character conflict or development that leads to a desirable character resolution for the story.
Maria's story line is literally "she was out on a Bike Race one day when the monster attack and her uncle is mortally wounded; he reveals she is a lost princess of another planet whose people and family had long since died out and begs her to get her hands on the Super Alien Protector Robot of their people to avenge them and she rides off to accomplish this, only to be ignore for the next half of the episode until the very end, where she encounters her brother after all these years".
This open the door for the following points...
How did she forget about her family and home world? At least Superman was a baby when he was sent to Earth when Krypton exploded, and did not know the truth until finding his father's message to him. Now, one could argue the psychological trauma to a child that young, her mind chose to block these memories as to cope with the harsh reality, which is possible, but it doesn't excuse the next point.
The two of them had been on Earth for at least over HALF A DECADE at bare minimum; Maria left Fleed as a child, no younger than 10(?), but is now a grown young woman of Hikaru's and Koji's age by the time she enters into the story, yet the uncle (who retains all of this knowledge) ignores the fact that there has been a war going on between Grendizer (their protector) and Vega (the destroyers of their world) and they are the only two people on Earth to not know about this?
Note: I know she is 14, when watching Ep50. I was shock to learn she was THAT young still.
One could imply because they live in the woods they don't know about the worlds events, but Maria is a member of a Motorcycle gang, with friends and everything, and they are in Japan - the ultimate KaijuCon Fest of Asia - its freaking Monster Bonanza literally every week; so much so that the monsters must lottery a day of the month to when launch their own attacks. Unless you are living under a rock, you don't get to ignore this and in the shows time line, two years(? citation needed here) had now passed since Vega made its presence known and Grendizer has been making a stand against them all this time, and the only other two Fleedians on Earth find about THIS NOW?
Sorry, but my Ass before I find this as a credible explanation! Japan is not some 3rd world country who misses the news. In this sort of stories, Japan IS ZE NOOZ!
Now, did the writers painted themselves into a corner and chose to ignore the rest to come up with a literal fast ending resolution to the 2nd plot?
It seems very Likely!
They could had been trying to make a slow ease passe episode, but it gets derailed by the nature of the Out control Beast Plot and the Avenging Princess Plot – you don't get to write a story of this nature to be one half deliverance and the other half barely cop-out.
Also, almost forgot, when the uncle tells her the story, the exact same sequence of pictures used in Umon's telling of Duke's past to Koji in Ep.2. (Umm... Call Back, I guess?)
Now, when I saw the opening sequence of the Hangar exploding, I was expecting it to be sabotage, with the Uncle and Maria having been involve or something – NOPE; everything was an accident while the two characters in question have been living oblivious to what has been going on until the past (a Vega Saucer Beast) comes knocking at their door (or torn the house down, either way, both analogies work) and sets this secondary plot in motion that gets no proper development because it is been suffocated by the primary plot and skids over the recently mopped floor.
Considering producers and writers had have Vega used other aliens for their missions, I'm surprise they didn't do the same for Maria: A brainwashed Princess, fighting for the Vega empire against her brother, which could have made something of a brief antagonist for a number of Episodes before been released from said Brainwash to then join her brother's side to exact their vengeance on those that destroyed their home and those they loved. That would had been the long good character saga this series could had needed, and it almost seems like the writers kinda didn't want to or were afraid to.
The episode itself is not bad, indeed is kinda fun due to the Beast story line, but it is derailed a bit by Maria's way Weaker Plot.
I think since any other pilot that has serve Vega to have confronted Duke (even the good ones that had a change of heart like Minao, Yara, Nadia, Haruko and Goss) had all died, the writers could not had Maria portrayed in such a manner knowing the general troupe of fate that would had awaited her had they taken this story line – like exceptions to the rule can't be a thing when writing story lines of such nature – thus, this makes her rushed introduction into the series something of a major dud. These misgivings seems to take greater notice when her powers get reveal in Ep.50.
To make a long story short, she was introduced for the sole purpose of been the answer from the heavens to Koji's plight of the need to have another pilot to take command of the Drill Spazer and be the 4rth member of Team Grendizer – that's her overall story arc in this episode. Its like making plain Ham and Cheese sandwich, yet they forgot to add the ham and cheese in between the slices of bread.
