Askari is a very prominent figure in lion kingdom history, having been the lion that first created the Lion Guard. After he and his half-brother Bomani are ousted from their home following the death of their father, the two brothers spent their time wandering alone as rogues. During their travels they came across several prides that they could've easily taken over, and while Askari is eager to challenge their lead males, Bomani doesn't share his enthusiasm. Witnessing the deaths of their father and siblings had deeply affected him, making him question why lion society had to be so cruel. Was all this killing really necessary? Askari doesn't quite feel the same way and the two brothers end up going their separate ways after having a heated argument.
Askari spends the next few weeks wandering through the wilderness, and at one point he ends up finding another male lion to fight and hopefully take over his pride. As the two males fight, Askari sees the male's cubs watching -the cubs he would have to kill if he were to win- and couldn't help but remember his brother's words. Was all this killing really necessary? While Askari is distracted the male ends up gaining the upper hand and wins the battle, and he doesn't hesitate to chase Askari out afterwards. Askari flees, but he soon ends up collapsing from the injuries he received in battle.
When he comes to, Askari finds himself face to face with a lioness treating his injuries. The lioness introduces herself as Fisayo, a healer in a group of lions known as the Night Pride. Askari was surprised to hear that name, as until know he didn't think that the Night Pride actually existed. As a cub he and his siblings were told bedtimes stories about a faraway pride when animals come from far and wide to seek healing from a pride of lions that made their home in a place called the Tree of Life, but he never really thought that such a place was actually real. And yet here he was, sitting in a den in an enormous tree and face to face with several different animals recovering from various ailments, some species he had never even see before. But one thing about the Night Pride that really surprised Askari was the structure of the pride. Instead of one male with several mates and cubs, there are instead multiple males each with one mate and cubs of their own. Fisayo explains to him that the lion society he knew wasn't always so savage. Lions prides once lived peacefully like they did in the Night Pride, but at some point in history the world around them became more savage, and the Night Pride hid themselves away until their home eventually became nothing more than a thing of legend.
During his stay at the Tree Of Life, Askari couldn't help but think about Fisayo's words, as well as his brother's. Did lion society have to be so savage? Was all this killing really necessary? While wandering through Cikha Escarpment one day, all these thoughts got to Askari and he let out a roar in frustration. But this ended up being no ordinary roar. When he roared, the clouds behind him seemed to morph into the faces of lions and the earth around him shook. And right after letting out that mighty roar, a mark resembling a lion's head appeared on Askari's shoulder.
Having been alerted by the roar, Fisayo finds Askari and tells him that he has been granted a great gift. He had been granted the Roar of the Elders, a power that many lions of the Night Pride once used to protect the weak and defend against the wicked. They had lost that power long ago when the pride hide themselves away, but now it had come back through him. Askari spends the next couple weeks learning how to use this newfound ability, and it's after saving the Tree Of Lie and its inhabitants from a fire when Askari decides what to do with it. He'll use it to defend others.
After bidding farewell to Fisayo and the other animals at the Tree of Life, Askari leaves the Night Pride to go find his brother Bomani. During his travels he hears that a lot had been going on at his homeland lately, that his brother had defeated the rogue male Alamgir and introduced new rules which stated that lions would no longer have to fight to take over each other's prides anymore. After reuniting with Bomani, Askari tells him all about what had happened during his travels and later forms a team of lions to help defend this new way of lion society his brother created, a team that would end up being called the Lion Guard.
After several years of leading the Guard, Askari's vision begins to fail. Knowing that he won't be able to properly lead the guard for much longer, Askari trains his oldest nephew Pili to become the new leader and, eventually, gifts the Roar to him. After retiring from his role as the Fiercest, Askari spends the rest of his days living peacefully at Pride Rock before eventually passing away from old age. His nephew Pili leads the guard for many more years before eventually passing the role down to the next generation, a Pridelands tradition that still continues to this day.
And here he is, Askari!
