TwitterWhen animals considered to be "prey" by the apex predators of the world begin to band together for safety, where does it leave those caught in between?
Namely, a pair of pine martens, carnivores and flesh-eaters themselves, but small enough to be considered food for the bears, wolves and gluttons of the forest and field. They're on a journey to seek sanctuary with the rabbits, squirrels and other prey that have gathered to Oren--but they don't know if welcome or condemnation will meet them.

Im getting either the "He is fighting the other marten, for us?!", or "They're fighting over the kill, I knew he couldn't be trusted", or simply "Sprig.... He.... he's dead"
That's my thoughts on her reaction at least. In any case, as you said, it is priceless. The other question I have is, did she get him killed by making a noise or did she watch it all and do nothing either.

They needed Egg as a translator when he first arrived least for the rest of the community, one of em even asked Eggs what Rask was sayin
So its possible they only understand some words a rough translation so to speak, Hemlock might know more then others since well she hunts

This is the page I was attempting to recall. Seems it's just a speed thing, to me. I did find the page you mentioned, though, so perhaps the speed thing goes both ways.

As I see it all hunter preys at least do speak and understand pred. They have a long conversation in pred (aka slow speak) when they check on the first victim as the bubbles are white while they check the scene and decide what to do. When they speak prey (aka fast speak or chittering as Yarrow puts it) the bubbles are green as we've seen when Rask kneels in front of the bleeding out Sprigg and tells him it was not him.
That means at least for me when you know how you can easily understand each other. After all Rask was only there max. 2 days and he can now speak chitter already

//puts hands together// Please let this be a case of her seeing what he's willing to do to protect them and his new way of life. Please don't let this be a classic misunderstanding and thinking Rask was helping kill Sprig. Oh lordy.

At least Rask has recently had a chance to eat, fish and eggs. What isn't known is Yarrow's current fitness. Did he eat much before getting here? He killed, but did he eat any of that before caching it? If he did, how long does it take for that meal to become usable energy to recover from starvation?
That looks like a fully conflicted Hewmlock of what to do.
My guess is she heard the argument after Sprigg was killed and now sees Rask trying to protect this fertile land from other predators after he shed tears for the squirrel.
It will not change her view on Rask, that much is for sure, cause the hatred runs too deep, but she might just start to respect him a bit.

GET HIS ASS
also extremely curious to see what hemlocks response to this is. she had to kill her children to prevent them from suffering, and now rask is threatening his father to try to prevent others from suffering, essentially. im hoping this is what gets through to her that rask is on their side and not another thing she'll use against him.

Here's what I could see happening. Rask and Yarrow get into a fight. Yarrow will start to get the better of Rask because of his age and experience and Hemlock will step up and run him through with the spear she has. Rask will live because of Hemlock's intervention. She will finally accept the fact that Rask is not the murderer she once thought he was. She may never like him or completely trust him, but she will accept him.
Its like his dad is just... existing in an entirely different world (which he probably is) he just is. not. getting. it. Because its likely a thought process that's just never gone through his mind. He keeps trying to understand what Rask is telling him by re-interpreting it though the usual mindless pred lens. He isnt even considering he may have cared for the squirrel bc its just not something that'd occur to him.
