Here's the next part of Isles of Sept. I know it's nothing to do with Macro march but I do have a commission in the works and three other stories that should suit that need for you all eventually!

In this Part we see Kail recover from the battle an awaken in a strange cave where he was being treated and kept alive by the very people he tried to invade. But why?

Kail slowly began to awaken. He had a sore head, heavy eyes and simply no energy to get up. His mind however was racing, he was alive was the first surprise. Last he knew he passed out fighting off multiple barbarians. The second surprise was he was looking at a very rocky stone roof. The place was dark but there was a lot of light shining through, maybe the darkness was just his vision? Something else got his attention was the sound of natural running water, quickly dripping and flowing nearby, must be a small river from the sound and volume. Where could he be?
The Captain rolled over on the side of the stone slab. He looked around, his vision still blurred. Dazed and confused he realised he was on some sort of makeshift bedding. A hard slab for a resting place. He rubbed his eyes and tried to make sense of what happened before this, but his mind felt fuzzy when he tried to remember the battle. It came to him in flashes, the screams of his men, the amount of barbarians around him, finally falling in battle. Needless to say it was pretty disorientating. Kail felt nervous. He needed to find where he was and find his way to the camp. But where was he?
The captain stumbled to his feet as he looked around the edges of his vison. They seemed to spread further and further out. The room seemingly growing, or was it just his eyes? Then shapes started to take form. He identified that there were more slabs in a similar position to the one he awoke on. All lined the outer edge of the dark room he was in. The walls all jagged and course. Not artificial, natural. He moved closer and touched the course edges. Stone. He was in a cave! That was part one, he thought, now I need to identify why I'm here.
Kail now had to rely on his training to get him through this. He looked about for anything along the side of the slate. He found bloody rags and a few scraps of random metals, plastics, cloths and other such supplies. No good for him, but seemingly useless. He checked the other slates, all around and under each one, trying not to make noise in case he was not alone. On the second one over he found a small damaged metal tray, on it, several small blades. Surgical tools? He was in some kind of medical centre. He slowly put together the pieces he had. He passed out surrounded by anthros after the battle. He awoke in a hospital where anything from his bed was removed. Clearly they didn't think he would be up and moving this soon. But why keep him alive? That's what Kail wanted to know, did they plan on executing him after getting information? They would have to catch him first!
"Captain, Sir..." Kail froze and before anything else was said he grabbed one of the small surgical knives and pointed at the sound's source. To his surprise there was a Female wolf standing right behind him, stone cold expression on her face as she raised a brow at the Fearsome Hoplite Captain that just armed himself with a blade shorter than her hand. She approached slowly and set down a plate on the side of the stone bed. Kail wiped his eyes dry and could finally see clearly. He looked the wolf up and down, checking for any hidden weapons, that she had none. The wolf sat down on the side of the bed and signalled the human to sit on the other side. Kail remained still, not moving an inch. He had never shared a seat willingly with one of her before and wasn't about to now. Especially after the battle!
The wolf seemingly sensed what he was thinking and got back up, leaving the plate behind and moving away from the bed. Kail slowly lowered the surgical knife before moving over to the bed cautiously. He looked down and examined the gift left for him. It was a warm, recently roasted slab of meat. Kail immediately wanted to tear into like a wild animal, for weeks he was stuck with lousy republic rations. But then his mind wondered, could it be poisoned. "No it's not poisoned." The wolf lady said with a sense of boredom. Kail gasped, could she read his mind? "You... you can see what I'm thinking?" He stammered. The wolf just shook her head and began to walk off. "Wait! Tell me where I am!" Kail commanded. She turned around and scowled at the disrespect given. "You are in my care now, Your not the first Human I've had to look after and not the first racist either, no it's not poisoned, yes you are safe and no you are not going to be killed in your sleep!" She told Kail off before marching out.
The Captain sat back down. He looked down at the juicy meat in front of him and quickly began to eat. He needed it, he was just too hungry for anything else at this point. Kail began to eat. He was badly hungry for some proper food. He didn't know when he would eat something this good again. All the weeks and weeks of military food had really ruined his appetite. As Kail was busy thinking about how much he disliked the food he had on the boat and in the army, he lost track of himself and before the human knew it he had devoured the entire steak. The captain placed the tray aside and sat there for a few moments. What did they want with him though? They fed him a good meal, took him from a battlefield and nursed him back to health. No matter what happened, he expected he would have to pay for the tribal warriors he killed during the battle.
Some time passed but then Kail heard footsteps coming back towards him. The human turned and expected to see the irritable wolf again. Instead he was looking at a shorter sight. An anthro fox came walking right up to him. The fox looked him up and down, almost disappointed. Kail remained quiet. The fox slowly picked up the tray where a slice of steak once sat. He raised a brow at the captain and seemingly looked surprised. "What is it?" Kail asked him, in the same serious tone as always. The fox immediately was startled and then chuckled. "I was worried, usually humans are so talkative. I thought you were planning something!" The fox laughed. Kail didn't find him too amusing. "Anyway where are my manners? Names Vulpa. I'm what you would call a Sargent in Anthon, and you're the Captain. So what's your name?" Vulpa laughed. Kail remained quiet, eyeing the anthro up and down. "We are not friends and names are for friends." The human stared right at the fox as he told him.
The fox backed up with his hands up in a teasing way. "Oh sorry officer, Forgot Anthon warriors are not allowed to be decent beings are they?" Vulpa mocked. Kail stood up and growled, clenching his fist. Vulpa quickly placed his hand on his belt. Kail noticed a small dagger. Both remained quiet and still, the fox's smug expression turning deadly serious much like the Captain. "Look it seems you trust my people as much as we trust yours. At least we are trying to be civil here, least you can do is be the same." Vulpa warned the human sternly. Both stood off for a moment longer before Kail finally takes a seat and looks away. He felt personally ashamed for being a prisoner for an anthro.
The fox sat down on one of the stone slabs opposite the captain. he leaned towards Kail. The fox looked genuinely curious. Kail reluctantly met his gaze. "I'm here, as you may guess, to ask a few questions. But I'll be nice, you go first, one question!" Vulpa told the human in front of him. Kail paused for a moment, as if it would be a trick. "Why am I still alive?" The captain asked. The fox chuckled. "You were saveable, the others either ran or were not." The fox answered honestly. Kail sat up. "That's not what I meant! Your people torture and execute victims, some eat them. Why am I lucky?" He demanded. Vulpa looked shocked at the accusation. "I have no idea what you heard, but our people do no such thing I assure you! We are not savages!" The fox replied. Kail looked unconvinced. The fox sighed and began to explain. "I understand your thoughts, there are savage tribes that little our world, but here, there is harmony, peace. We may keep to the old ways of society but we are not a barbaric tribe. Did your messenger not pass that on?" The fox asked.
Kail froze. Messenger? "What do you mean?" He asked. Sensing something was off about it. "A man came here, wearing your colours. Speaking as you do, making promises of trade and security. We rejected politely and he simply stayed and wrote down about us in his little book. He promised he would spread the word of our people and that we don't want to be bothered. He promised that we would be left alone." Vulpa trailed off, showing a face hurt by betrayal. "Kail, my name is Kail. This messenger never made it home as far as I know, what was his name?" The captain asked. The fox looked up at the human surprised. But touched that he was told the name of the one he spoke with. "Carlson Deminos, I think." Vulpa said softly. Kail looked away and cursed under his breath. "Never mind, he made it home." The captain started. "The commander in charge of the invasion, that's his son! It seems they both have the same respect for others, like farther like son!" Kail ranted for a brief moment. He soon realised that by disclosing that information he committed a serious strike against Anthon's military. If exposing the Commander's son was ever discovered that was.
The fox sighed. "So you know this commander personally?" Vulpa asked concerned. "Yeah, unfortunately! He was the bastard that forced me to march those men right into your ambush!" Kail resented. The fox looked confused for a moment. "Why?" He asked. Kail wished he had an answer and simply shook his head. "Trying to get me killed I imagine." He told the fox. "Why didn't you surrender?" Asked the fox. "Anthon don't surrender especially to savages... who we thought were savages" Kail felt strange as he corrected himself. Surely it didn't matter what these anthros were like, all their people were savage in one way or another... right?
"We have left you some fresh clothes by the cave entrance, if you turn right you can find our people's washing area. Warm water, very relaxing. Afterwards the Chief would want to speak to you, our head man. I imagine you will... stay out of trouble?" The fox asked. Kail looked puzzled. "Washing area? Stay out of trouble? You're letting a prisoner just walk your camp?" He asked. The fox rolled his eyes. "Our people will keep their distance until the chief says you can be trusted. Grey will be helping your prepare. Try not to piss her off again eh?" He smiled. Kail looked at him with a blank expression. "The wolf girl from before? One of our most gifted healers. Her name? Grey Luptia!" The fox explained until Kail nodded. The fox pointed out the clothes as the Captain stood up and walked over to them. "Th-Thank you," Kail said.
The fox nodded and walked out the cave. But for Kail that was a lot harder, the first time he had ever thanked an anthro before in his life!
Kail got out of the makeshift shower, steam flooded the cave still and as much as he wanted to bathe in the larger pools of hot water, he knew he shouldn't test the patience of the tribal kind. As he picked up his fresh clothes he realised Luptia was just walking in, holding some cloth. He covered his groin and looked at the wolf with a slight embarrassed expression. Luptia continued to walk in without slowing, the idea of nudity being embarrassing was completely alien to her. She placed a makeshift towel down in front of the human and looked at him expectedly. "Feeling refreshed Captain?" She asked. Kail reluctantly dropped his clothes and picked up the towel to take a look at it. He angled his crotch away, still uncomfortable about it.
"Yes, thank you." He said quickly as he opened the towel and dried himself down awkwardly. Luptia sighed, "The chief wants to see you personally Captain, so hurry, don't keep a tiger waiting!". Kail nodded his head awkwardly. He looked around the stone walls of the cave and saw the pools at the bottom again. "Are the hot water taps limitless?" He asked. The wolf shook her head. "The supply is plentiful but not endless we have to top it up when we can, we usually have set turn times." She explained. "How long is a turn?" Kail asked. The wolf sighed. "You have had three." She said before turning away, and walking out. The captain looked about and saw the odd few anthros around him, each one giving him a different look. Some frightened, some annoyed, some disgusted.
Kail of course would be the biggest hypocrite he knew if he claimed to not know why he received such looks. Hell he had a natural dislike for these people and yet something about them keeping him alive stirred the internal pot of bigotry inside the worn Captain. Perhaps a meeting with their leader would help the human decide if he wants to trust them with his life or not. Only time would tell, and it seems he now has plenty of it...
