I found a website with the greatest c64 music of all time, in .sid format, so I had to get a plugin, and the first one I listened to was Last Ninja 3, as per request, and it is pretty good considering it's an 8 bit system. NES doesn't even compare...I'd say this is more comparable to later SNES music.
Thanks for the comment. The 64 had easily the best sound hardware for its time (it was originally going to be even better but it had to be left unfinished due to time or budget constraints). It was basically a digitally controlled analog synth instead of the simple tone generators that most of the other 8-bits had.
Nothing has the sound like C-64. Except the SID-station. If you like metal and SID/C-64 music you should check out this band:
