Wellp I've been meaning to get around to getting a sketchbook rolling for conventions..but I really didn't want to juuust do a sketchbook and have folks draw Balaa or some other character in it. Don't get me wrong I love seeing interpretations of my character..and thats why I leave their designs fairly open ended..buuuut I really wanted to give my fellow artists even more room than that to..well play!
Ive been watching Lord of the Rings a lot and, well given the films are my favorite films...I felt it perhaps a suiteable homage to pay to such a great inspiration. Basically the sketchbook is painted to look like the Fellowship of the Ring dvd cover..liberty taken to various design elements..of course. Should subsequent sketchbooks come, the next will be Red and the following blue..as per film order ;).
Since the idea is hard to explain each time, I included an insert that will be found in the book and explain the 'mission' of said book..and here it is:

I love fancy tome like books lol.. I did one in like back in highschool in like the 10th grade lol, built it from scratch it consisted of a cheap looking pleather bound cover and some metalic cardboard corner protector thingies and a large stack of ancient printer paper, the kind that have the 2 edges that you can rip off, ripped off one side and bound the other side together with rope. Its so oogleh compared to yours D;
This book is really beautiful, as is the Idea behind it! Usually I don't like old books because they either look too old or to new. This one's really good, tho! ..You wouldn't do one as commission, would you?
Well, if I could afford it, I'd definitely buy one - that is if you'd do one, of course... Oo

I would love to draw in that. It would be wonderful but i do not know if i would be good enough to do so and make it something worty of the book itself. I know it would take me a while to do something in it though. as i would want it as beautiful as my hands will allow
a friend gave me the book for christmas 2 years ago..was just regular black cover and its been sitting collecting dust on my shelf til now. The inside cover says 'Barnes and Noble' so Im guessing thats where its from but Ive seen similar books at Walden books and other book stores.
I'm extremly impressed by this and if I ever get a chance to run into you at a con I would love to get a peek at it in person. =3
Ok, so a typical bound sketchbook, but what material was the cover made of and what paints did you use? You reproduced the look so well.
Those tears and scratches in the cover, or what look like tears and scratches, are they painted in, or real and did you burn the paper to get that weathered and worn apearance?
