This little gadget is going to make life a bit easier for me when putting together the ukes.
The outer part is two pieces of 3/4" plywood that are joined at the middle by more plywood and deck-screws. This will allow me to take the finishes tone box out when I'm done needing the mold.
The spreaders on the inside are made of all-thread some hex nuts and wing nuts and pieces of MDF harvested from some crappy ikea furniture.
The way this thing works is by forcing the newly bent and wet sides to take the shape i want as the cool down and dry out by pushing them against the sides of the mold. Once thats done i will cut the sides flush with each other and use the long spreader to clamp it the neck and tail block while glueing them in after which all the spreaders will be unnecessary (hopefully.
Once the sids are joined i will glue the plates to the sides by using the screws that go around the the outside of the thing as anchor points for high tension rubber-bands which will serve as my clamps. Then presto! I have half a uke! and all that left is drilling the holes for the neck bolts I can do that after taking apart the two halves of the mold and pulling the newly put together body out.

:3 yeah, its a bit different than the ones I have worked with in the past. The ones at Roberto Venn were designed to be used with a different clamping system that involved "go bars" (fiberglass rods) to apply the clamping pressure. I borrowed this idea with the rubber bands from a mexican luthier that makes some gorgeous looking F-style mandolins.
Oh you'll get it. I just figured out the wattage of soldering iron I'm going to have to jury rig as my side bending iron so some pics and possibly video will be going up soon with me doing that. The test piece I did today came out quit nice. No scorching or wrinkling and it left me with a really nice stiff curve.
