So I learned today that watching TV while doing designs is a bad idea.
It takes about ten times as long and I end up with boring repetitive ideas.
My animation teacher in college taught me arguably the most important lesson when it comes to creating quality art, "Think while you draw."
If you're not thinking about what you're drawing, you're going to be disappointed in the final result.
It's annoying that I have to keep relearning that one...
First six silhouettes were done over a period of two and a half hours while watching TV. Last two silhouettes were done in a period of ten minutes while not watching TV.
The difference, it is significant.
Also: Woah, #1 is really bad. What was I thinking?
Anyways, I'm going to redo this character again tomorrow, keeping the last two silhouettes and doing another six as well, before trying to push through to at least stage five.
I live and learn...

In a way, yes, it can be tricky to plot out where everything goes just by silhouette, but that's not really what I'm doing in this phase.
What I'm primarily looking for in this phase are interesting shapes, and interesting relationships between shapes.
Take the coat on this guy. I have no idea what kind of buttons he has, if he wears the coat open or closed, or what he's wearing underneath, (I have a guess, as this is a redesign of an old character, but you get my point). I don't know if the pneumatic tubing goes in front or behind him, or where it connects on his back, or to what. They're just fun shapes.
The choosing of what bump or shape actually is what, is done in Stage 2, where I take the silhouette and fill out the tones.
