I thought they're call anthromorphs?

The term is anthropomorphic and it refers to anything (an object, animal, etc.) that is granted human attributes. When you take an animal and pretend in art, writing, etc. that it can walk and talk that's called anthropomorphizing. So someone who talks about their car or computer like it's alive is said to be anthropomorphizing about them.

In the case of genetic engineering people, those terms don't really apply since the human attributes are real and not immagined.

I recognise the term GELF from Red Dwarf. Just a guess that that's where you got the name from. ^^;
