'Twas Zentrin who spoke with them, but the reason I heard was because they don't allow "commercial" shooting on the beach without a permit. We tried to tell them that it wasn't commercial, that we were just here for fun.
But Col. Douchebag simply said: "I decide what's commercial, and this looks commercial."
Zentrin: "Can I say something?"
Col. Douchebag: "No, get out of here!"
They walked up and down the beach a few times, waiting for us to go. It takes a few minutes to get out of suit, so they had to wait. Eventually, they just stood down the beach staring at us, trying to give us the eye.
I'm glad for one thing, though- on their last stroll past us, Zentrin had his shirt open still, with his dog tags showing, and now that his head was off, they could see his Marine haircut. So now they know they were complete assholes to not just some Hollywood goons, but to 2 active Marines- honorable men (the other is chancethedragon).

This was for a project.... I am going to continue on the project tomorrow. I would love to have more people around of course but time is of the essence and distactions cannot be endured. I leave monday for six weeks and I have alot of work to do. Sorry. but perhaps next time.
Aha, I see! Do you have a plan for the wings yet?
I recommend going to OmniWings, that's where I got the frame for mine ^_^
For the actual wing covering though, you may need to find a custom upholsterer, a fursuit maker, or somebody really good with sewing to make it though, because the guy at OmniWings only makes the frame and very simple coverings. For mine, thank God my dad knows an old upholsterer, he cranked that thing out in less than a week @_@

well for Nony's wings (which will be show based only like for Anthrocon or FC) will be mechanically controlled by switches and pre-set modes in my paws through wiring and several dozen motors that will each have their own electrical unit. it will be realistic to the point that if i gave someone a hug, the wings would flare, tilt, turn forward under my arms like another pair of arms, and curl around that person as if i was giving them a full bodied hug.
its going to take years of designing, building, trial-and-error before i even consider getting any sort of covering for them. but thank you so much for the link, i will definitely consider them :)

Wow! Yeah, I was considering going for something like that, and I may yet do so, but my Chance suit is unacceptably incomplete without wings, so much so that I've only worn it in public without them once (when the covering was still being finished). x_x
I'd say the OmniWings wooden frame alternative is good for now, at least until you do have a working electronic frame; from what I've noticed, most people don't seem to care if they see you reach behind you to lift up the levers to expand the wings, they're amazed enough that you can do it at all. ^_^
I have seen one suiter, a gryphon, with what looked like a hydraulic or pneumatic system with an electronic control for his wings (back at Califur 2 I think), but I never saw him again nor got his FA, if he had one. He had the best costume wings I've ever seen by far though, and I'd love to get tips from him if I could find him again. Probably a good advisor for both of us. XD
The only complaint I had about his wings was the backpack; it kind of ruined the effect for me, but the technical achievement alone was incredible.
Someday though, when I have thousands of dollars to blow on whatever, I'll probably design my own electronic wings too! Plans for smoke coming out of my nostrils, and a short-burst fire breath system, are already in the works though.

pyrotechnics are extremely complicated to the point of not lighting yourself up in the process, especially carrying around a flammable solution or combustible somewhere (anywhere) on your body, especially indoors. however, that would look freaking amazing at night at a con outside with permission/permits from local authorities so you dont get arrested for improper use of flammables haha.
as for the wings, i think i would start with the basics of point A to point B expanding with the "arm" and the leading "rib" or finger of the wing until i could figure out how to work the gears or mechanics around to get all the parts in the right order and then make it so it was reinforced and permanent.
in regards to your backpack design, perhaps a shirt of some sort with slots in the sides to fit over and hide the pack would possibly give more realism to it? not sure if you have that already or havent considered it so just an idea ;)
