In case you guys at AC didn't notice, last night (Thursday) at approximately 10:00 pm EST Futurama triumphantly returned to the airwaves. I say triumphant because the show seems to have defied even my most optimistic predictions and actually come back... good. Like, better than the unfortunate straight-to-DVD movies and the atrocious 'final' season some many years ago. Still, the show is not up to its first couple-seasons prime, as the episodes continue their latter bothersome tendency to glut thirty minutes with far too many concepts and unnecessary twists. I dare you to describe the new episodes as simply as 'Fry and Bender go to a robot insane asylum' or 'The Planet Express Crew go back in time to Roswell.' Luckily things such as 'coherency' and 'structure' aren't as important to slapstick comedy as they are to, say, everything else, and as such the shows do not suffer too much. Futurama will always live and die by its comedy, and I dare say it's funnier than ever. Now if the writers could only take a slight step back and give the characters some breathing room again...
