This is another one of Nemesis.
It's not that he's really in a bad mood, and he's not just genuinely irked at me (although that happens sometimes). In this case, he's walking by Mariah, his cagemate, and she's the one in a bad mood, so he's just doing the cursory snarl to let her know that she can just stay right where she is and keep the snarls to herself. How can I tell? Well, that leads me to the next feline trivia lesson!
One can tell a lot by a cat's body language. That's true of many animals. In Nemesis' case, look at his ears. Yes, he's got a pretty aggressive snarl on his face, and out-of-frame to his right, is where Mariah is. If you can't tell how I know that, look at his right ear. See how it's laid back? See how the left ear is perked forward (oriented on me, btw)? Also notice how that right ear's not laid completely flat? Also notice how his head's tilted just slightly to better orient that laid-back ear on his target (aka Mariah)? Now, look at his whiskers. See how the right ones are laid back a little? And the left ones are forward, but not all the way?
In the most general terms, the slant of the ears, the pitch of the whiskers, and the tail-twitch factor for a cat can reveal an awful lot about what's coming in the next few seconds. For example, if the ears are totally perked, the whiskers are jutting entirely forward, just the very tip of the tail is lashing, then kitty is in full-predator mode. That means the targeting routine is locked on target, and if you're the one that happens to be in the laser sights, then you're about to be leopard food! There is no hope. You're doomed. There's not a dern thing you can do. If said leopard is less than 20-feet from you, then you'll not see more than a blur as it stand, bolts forward, and hits you at about mach 2. Leopard (and jags too) have such an incredible reflex ability, there's just no hope at all for a human to be able to react to the simply insane speed of their movements.
In the case of this pic, if you look closely at Nemesis' overall body-tension, you can see that while he's extremely muscular, he's not overly tense. If he were /really/ snarling at me, or worried about Mariah for that matter, then you'd see his body in a much more tense-and-ready-for-attack state. So here's the end-result of this pic:
Nemesis is walking down the side of the cage towards me. Mariah's in a bad mood, and is snarling at him constantly (think "old, married couple" ), but all Nem really wants is a shoulder scratch, which is his ultimate motivation why he's headed towards me. So he comes towards me, and he'll get right into the chain-link, head-on with me, and give me a genuine snarl. It's not about me; it's about Mariah. It's that "She can be /such/ a bitch!" snarl. Just a comment. An expression of exasperation. :)
After a moment of frustration release, he'll turn sideways and put his shoulder into the wire, knowing that I'll scratch wherever he allows, which I do. Eventually, he'll just flop out on the ground there, and let me scratch to my heart's content. Well, almost. He's not usually one to remain for very long. He gets as many scritches as he wants, and then he'll roll over and away from the wire and be done with it. He's kinda particular that way. He's not one that needs much attention; he /likes/ it, but just not a /lot/ of it.
So this is another of the regal Nemesis. I hope you like it, this one being a bit more of a snarly pose. :)

(Shasta grins) Sometimes, Nem and Mariah don't get along so well, and Nem just needs to vent. That's really what this pic is about.
But it's also a little part of my ongoing "Artist Conspiracy", as I think having good pix that demonstrate various "expressions" that cats have are great for reference pix. :)

Oh, this one is great:D I've been wanting to draw this picture, see? And i had a frontview just like this, of a cat, in mind:) In fact, the pic i'm thinking of, has two cats showing the front as well as a human:S
If you have one like this of a lion, then i'll be one happy man for the entire next week:)
And thanks for the trivia too. I always enjoy reading that:) *It completes the picture:p*

"Think old married couple" -- Bawhaha! That's terrible, but yet so true..
In the words of Robin Williams "Pretty soon your making love like 'Do you realize the garage is open?'"
Hehe. Beautiful picture.. I still have to say how insanely jealous I am of your being able to work with such immensely beautiful creatures..

Aww he looks lovely, nice analysis, and shot I could sort of tell it wasn't a full aggressive mood, I'm usually good at reading animal body language. I also worked in a zoo for a few months. I wasn't a zookeep, but I made friends with one who allowed me to feed and pet some of the less aggressive animals and she told me stuff about some of them :P Like the red panda, GAWWW they're so sweet! I would liek to be a zoologist, but it costs too much to go to university for it...
The other downside to animal-related professions is there's not any money in it. It's a total labor-of-love. That's one of the reasons I don't do field biology anymore. I love the animals, but being able to pay for food and a roof over my head got to be a little higher priority.
I would definitely encourage you to try. Sometimes, it's not very rewarding, but if you have the time, sometimes a volunteer position can turn into a real one, which is always nice. In the end, it's not necessarily what you know as /who/ you know that can get you into a good job.
In any case, the best of luck to you in your endeavors! :)

I've got a few with him sitting/laying on his platform and being a total snarl; I should probably find one of those and post it for the more up-close facial-snarl detail.
I thought this one would be a little more appreciated, as he's standing and walking, and so a lot more muscular details are visible for his chest and shoulders, which I thought folks might also find useful, even though I didn't mention all that in the write-up-babble.
I've got another one of him walking, but he's at about a 45-deg angle to the camera, so you can see his whole side, which it great for a muscle study reference. I'll probably post that one everntually too.

(Shasta grins sheepishly) Well, visitors to my house call it "The Museum", as I have every form of feline-related art known to mankind: statues, figures, paintings, prints, stuffed-animals, etc, etc.
I like it, but I've had people stay in my guest room and say they couldn't sleep because of all the "eyes watching them". I didn't offer comment. I mean, what can you say to that? :)

Nemesis has alwaysbeen rather amusing, especially when I've got Macumba out on a walk. Nem always comes over to get some attention, and his son really has a fit and acts like he wasn't to fight.
Nem just looks at him without even an expression-change, kinda like: "Bring it on, Punk! I'll smack the snot outta ya, twerp!"
Of course, Nem's got about 50lbs on Macumba, so it wouldn't be much of an argument.
All things told, Nemesis is just one of those cats that's not even remotely intimidated by anything. Even the lawnmower is nothin'.

Man, I think Nemesis is probably the most beautiful of all the cats you photograph. I like the way he bares fang and narrows his eyes.
But Mariah couldn't be a bitch, ne? She's a cat, not a dog. And aren't female cats called queens?
Yeah, if you look for it, you can definitely see the annoyance on his face.

Well, I guess I'll always be horribly biased towards my sons, but he certainly is a very regal and noble beast. Jumanji is another one that I've always thought was incredibly handsom and had awesome poise.
And yes. You're very correct. It's a little know feline trivia point that female cats are called "queens", although I have never been able to find reference as to how that name came about. Of course, the same's true of the males being "toms"; no one seems to know why.
Leopards are just so magnificent to me; they are all extremely expressive and bold beasts. Of course, I'm horribly biased. :)

In the study of psychology, especially when we're analyzing ourselved, one of the steadfast rules is that we tend to be attracted to those that are most like us, at least in the terms of friendship. It's probably one of the greater reasons why I like cats: they are a free spirit and an independent soul. But I also like the comradery of the wolves. Both species inspire me.
There's always a lot we can learn about ourselves by looking through someone else's eyes. Sometimes, those eyes just need to belong to a leopard, who will always be honest and truthful about everything, even if it hurts a little. :)

That's very true for the most part. Canines and felines have a much different psyche, although wolves, in many ways, are very similar to cats. They don't just trust everyone. It takes time, and you have to earn it, very much like you do with felines.
Domestic animals have really be...er...stunted by many years of...well, domestication. Some are indeed intelligent, but their dependance on humanity is rather bred into them. I guess that's why I like big, wild things that can kill me; you earn the trust of a beast from /that/ category, and you've really accomplished something. :)

Yeah. ^_^ That's why I specified domestic dogs, wolves are incredible. A real force of their own. I would love the opportunity to spend time with big cats like that, there just isn't any real space where I live. But I don't plan on being here any longer than I have to. Really, I don't plan on staying in america forever...
