If I recall this version is meant to be the original and the lesbian one was the afterthought.
The reason for the gap in the chest was purely because of the kiss on the shoulder, which if I remember was the hardest to look natural. I definitely remember making an earlier pose where his chest and her back touched but the heads would clip real easy and even outside of that his mouth was way too far to give any shoulder kisses, so this pose was the closest I could get to getting both the hug and the kiss to look even remotely natural.
Thankfully the lesbian version exists so this pic isn't a total loss haha.
