The sun had long since set as you made your way back through the woods, trying to keep track of the trail you'd been on. The moon, you'd neglected to consider, wasn't up this time of month, and the darkness that fell over the Southern Ash was troublesome. Still, the nature of these woods meant that you likely wouldn't need to worry about predators, wild or otherwise, as you made your way back to the encampments found in the dried riverbeds. A guest of the Southern Ash forest, you knew the rules as well as everyone else: Cause no harm or strife, respect the woods and the others who inhabited them. Simple to the point of almost seeming silly, but somehow everyone seemed to follow them. The leader of this strange sanctuary, a forest dragon named Garjan, seemed, mostly, to be interested in merely being left alone, while offering a place for others to feel comfortable doing the same, so long as they could pull their weight.
Still headed south, it slowly became clear that you'd wandered off the path, and though you were certain the stars kept you moving in the right direction, you weren't sure how far off you were. A soft glow caught your eye, faint enough you had to squint to notice a gentle blue glow through the ash trees as you continued forwards through the woods amongst the lively summer sounds of the forest. Hoping it meant you were near the encampment, you headed for the light. The nearer you drew, the more unnatural you'd feel the blue hue of the lights were, a frown crossing your muzzle as your brain tried to imagine what could be causing such a glow, your eyes not catching any movement that would imply others were there. Eventually you came to a tiny clearing in those trees, blue light flooding the area as you moved in. You'd give a little gasp, suddenly feeling as though you were in an alien world, forest floor covered in a soft moss. Plump, luminous mushrooms grew all over, glowing brightly with that odd azure light while strange, ephemeral wisps flitted about, composed of the same blue light, moving with erratic patterns like enormous fireflies, though there didn't seem to be anything at the center of those glowing flares, the things moving without a sound in the bizarre grove.
Entranced, you moved in further, curious what this place was, what caused this fungi to be so luminous and what these dancing wisps were, hands carefully moving out to try and brush one with your touch in passing, though the lights seemed to avoid your hands and body with little effort. Wonder filled your head as you moved further in, looking down at your feet as you did your best not to trample the innumerable mushrooms on the mossy forest floor. A sudden hum would reverberate in that little clearing, your eyes going wide as a complex glyph expanded beneath your step, drawn in a white light as you seemed to trigger some manner of spell.
You stumbled, trying to avoid whatever you'd accidentally managed to trigger, kicking and knocking several of those large mushroom caps in your haste to move. Spores exploded from the fungi, a glowing blue cloud filling the small clearing, causing you to try and step back as it rose, your clumsy footfalls only knocking more of those mushrooms. Deciding you'd best be out of this place, you turned to leave, covering your mouth and coughing a bit from the cloud of spores that filled your lungs. Your head spun, feeling like you'd been inverted, inner ear thrown for a loop as you tried to take another few steps, losing balance immediately and falling back onto your back amongst those glowing mushrooms. Your head spun, the trees seeming to do the same as you stared up at the sky through the blue haze, watching those wisps idly float about above you. No doubt the mushrooms were poisonous, a trap for anyone foolish enough to poke their nose where they didn't belong. Likely, you wouldn't survive the ordeal, and whomever had set the trap would have your corpse to themselves. Strangely, you didn't feel very stressed, a soft smile crawling across your face at how comfortable the soil felt. The dancing blue sprites were rather beautiful, as were the shimmering stars in the night sky beyond the trees. You began to let your mind drift, at peace with your life and what you'd done with it, ready to rest at long last as your head floated in a pleasant, debilitating haze, body feeling as though it were made of steel, sinking steadily deeper into the forest floor.
The sound of a chuckle found its way to your ears, though you couldn't be certain if you'd imagined it in your state, eyes slowly rolling to glance to the direction you thought it might have come from. An enormous muzzle came into view, great teal eyes scanning you over. You'd attempt to grin and wave, finding both efforts all but impossible in your state. A forest dragon, you recognized, those giant teeth and scales unmistakable to even your hazy mind.
"One shouldn't be wandering around alone in this neck of the woods, little one. You never know what sort of trouble you could find yourself in. Lucky I was near by. Anything was likely to happen to you in this condition." The dragon's voice sounded out, seeming to reverberate, echoing through your body it felt like. You grinned dopily, wanting to apologize, wanting to introduce yourself, wanting to show your condolences for the shattered horn atop the dragon's head. Instead, you only blinked slowly, giving the slightest of nods before you felt yourself rising up, ascending towards those stars as the dragon gently gathered you up from the earth.
"Come on, little thing. Let's get you back and clear that head of yours, hmm?" The dragon offered with a soft chuckle as you felt him began to move. You smiled sleepily up at that green muzzle as he spoke, feeling a need to give it a smooch of appreciation a moment before the world slipped away as unconsciousness seized you.
Here's a super fun experimental headshot I got from the super cool PKpancake over on Twitter. Be sure to give them a follow, they have some really cool stuff!
I've slowly been wanting to get some more pieces of Garjan. Even though his personality isn't exactly always what I'm looking for in a dragon, I've really grown fond of him and his story the more that I've expanded on it. That other folk seem to enjoy his design has been fun, if not expected, haha. Love how the lighting and colors came out on this piece. Gar is such a charismatic doof.

I.....loooooove this story. After I wake up from my unconscious state I'm expressing my utmost affectionous appreciation to Garjan for rescuing me from toxic fungal sacrificial death once and for all. His sparkling emerald-blue eyes, his pearly white smile, alluring velvety smooth voice.......nothing can suppress my love and obsession for this swarthy southern ash sweetheart.
And so sorry for the absence these past few weeks. I've been catching up on half-done pics and figuring out the story sequences for my encounter with Olli and Garjy. Can't get these two out of my head.^^,
