If you want to lighten a spot, just touch it with an eraser, and then smooth out the edges of the lightened spot with a paper tool. So you can do glare, for example. In drawing with pencil an eraser is the number two tool! If the eraser turns black with graphite, rub it against a wooden board or other hard surface to clean up.
Oh, and sorry if my advice sounds too simple, it goes without saying, but some may not know it.
