Unsurprisingly Freggie is a good freediver as a frog. Not really needing a mask or swimfins, she heads through the depths of lakes, rivers and sometimes even the sea.
Unfortunately curiosity can sometimes take hold too much of her and so she dared for once to enter a shipwreck as well. A ceiling above her head separating her from the surface always made her somewhat nervous, but it didn't stop her this time. She knows she can trust in her skills as an amphibian.
Like her much smaller, feral relatives, her kind possesses the ability to absorb oxygen from the water through her skin. To make best use of that, she wears a swimsuit that does let the water reach her skin easily. However this skill is merely the evolutionary remainder of their feral counterparts. The oxygen she can get does by far not suffice to keep a developed being like her conscious indefinitely. As a result, while it does extend her time underwater significantly, she does need to rely on air in her lungs and voluminous cheeks. So she does have a limit on her dives.
Usually that is not a problem - "I'll just swim in through the ship and head out one of the many broken windows" - that's what she thought at least. However she didn't account for the many bulkheads that had fallen shut when this large ship sank. Most of they were either rusted in place, or require quite some effort to pry open by pulling at the handle wheels. She made it roughly just past the middle of the wreck when the tightness in her chest grows significantly.
Bubbles start to burst from her lips in regular intervals when her lungs complain about the stale air in them. Freggie tries to calm herself by rubbing her chest and swallowing some of the water that gathered in her mouth. She can't help it but begin to worry though. "I should give up and return through where I came. But.. do I remember all the turns I took?! Nhh.. my chest burns...", races through her mind when she is confronted with another closed bulkhead.
In vain she looks around for any help, air or shorter escape but she is far from the outer hull and the only bubbles she sees are the stale ones she lost herself and now are trickling along the ceiling. Her cheeks started minutes ago already to turn purple - a sign that her body is barely sustaining, mainly just from the oxygen in the water. The spasm in her chest grow gradually worse and it is only a matter of time until she won't be able to keep the water out anymore.
Suddenly Freggie remembers something she had been taught long time ago, just after not being a tadpole anymore and she had to learn about the ins and outs of having lungs. While their skin could not support them conscious with oxygen as she knew, it was said to suffice while sleeping, increasing the chance of being found by someone in time. The only condition was not to be entirely deprived of oxygen to begin with.
"But should I do that now? Even if I survive a couple hours until the water here has no oxygen either anymore, will anyone come in time?", she thinks while exerting herself to open another door but she immediately has to clamp a hand over her mouth. "M..MWghrlurbl..." - "I am at my limit.. I have to make a decision.."
