Second Life has different graphic settings which can be used to make your experience better. Most of them are located in Graphics tab in Preferences (SL Viewer).
I am using Firestorm viewer which has Phototools menu, for quick changes of those if necessary (best thing where you do a lot of snapshots).
Here are My usual settings, and also recommended ones if you don't have high end graphic card (special lightning effects off).
