A Precisely Engineered Cage - By HigthNekoHNZ
HigthNekoHNZ created this masterpiece where i asked him to do something... ...calling it "complicated" at this point would be an understatement.Since i am the kind of fool that can totally let people look at beautiful art but also wants to communicate something with his commissions... and there has been a lot of work done on this specific commission... let me tell you why i asked this.
There is this "problem" associated with beautiful women. And it's that they are essentially seen as objects and valued only for their bodies. Anything else is secondary. You might have a Ph.D. and be part of a research team, or you might have achieved olympic feats, or you might be part of a delegation to solve political problems, or you might be trying to do many other things... but all people care is your looks and if you have worn the same dress 3 times in a row. "Oh, my goodness, how beautiful you are! What shampoo do you use? Oh?! You're just out of the decontamination chamber because you were in the cyclotron and you noticed there was a beam invisible to human eyes in one corner of the room that might have affected 3 of your colleagues?!?!? How quaint! You can even say smart words!"
That happens to men too... but it is usually the other way around "this man has achieved this, and oh! He is also good looking!" *nods*
So. If that happens to normal people... what if the person in question was a construct engineered specifically to be something to be beautiful and little else? Philomela's condition is simple, she requires somebody to wind her for 1 hour before she can function for 1 minute. She might be good looking, sure, but she basically has 1 minute to live where she will be ordered around and has to understand and execute those orders.
In those conditions, as you might understand... all that che can be asked to do... is to "pose" around and "look beautiful".
In the story this is what causes her to be destroyed in part 2 of the comic (which i hope i can start again soon, and wish oh so much luck to the comic artist❤️🍀) after having been sold.
People liked her looks and wanted to replicate her ability to comprehend and execute orders, to do so they did a few tests and then dismantled her into her component parts.
Incidentally this is also how she got hold of magic and... well... like a young lady going into her "dark and edgy phase" she became this demonic figure known as Philekdikisi. To get revenge. Naturally this resulted in something awkward and no revenge was ever taken... if anything she ended up dying again to save lives...
This piece is very important to me.
On one side there is Philomela in a cage that looks like her own body. Her chakras neatly framed. Her Mulhadara and Anahata are her winding points meaning her ability to exist and feel love are something that others have to fulfull for her by giving her the life, except her Mulhadara is also normally hidden for it is "shameful" just like beautiful women are routinely and publicly shamed if they show any sign of not being pure and chaste. Her Sahasrara had always been absent (for story reasons and because i honestly do not believe any human being can truly achieve the crown) and her Ajna neatly denied by her own bisected heart in the cage made by her own body. The bisected heart (the fact that she is both a dream and something very real) ending up taking away her ability to reason and her lucidity because of the actions others take on her due to her nature felt very perfect. The pose is that of a doll that has just been unveiled, and she is obviously missing her wings. We can't have a symbol of freedom in a construct, right? also the cage is little more than big enough to contain her body, she cannot move at all in there.
The second image... is her transformed in Philekdikisi. If at first impact this would seem an image born out of some FNAF fanfic or something. a being that is all claws trying to crawl towards the observer. But actually... what it is meant to show is the same thing that will happen in the comic. That Philomela transformed into Philekdikisi out of rebellion and to break free of the cage. But it is something that looks beautiful and at the same time... it is very much clumsy. Her rending claws have been tangled in a messy way with the cage... and since she was missing 2 limbs she is missing her legs therefore she is forced to crawl out of there on her bare hands while trying to free herself of that stupid cage of her beautiful body that will not leave her not even in her acts of rebellion. Getting her tangled more and more. She might have torn her heart in 2 to get free but it's still the pieces of her heart that are stopping her. Locking her blades away, just like it's her ability to have empathy that will stop her in the comic to exact her won revenge even though she set her mind into it and reshaped her body to achieve it.
The lack of the symbol of freedom, the wings, in the first part of the image becoming a lack of mobility and grace in the second part because she ends up missing her legs is part of what makes this image something i like very much. A lot of times people who have been abused end up having very, very little "social grace" for the rest of their lives, and so it felt very much appropriate. The atmosphere itself also changes from something very much real to something that seems out of a dream, losing any sharpness.
In case anybody was wondering Philekdikisi is indeed Philomela "upside down" so to speak. Her hands have 4 fingers like the toes of Philomela, Her legs have a single digit because they were supposedly formed from the wings of Philomela (originally i had planned Philomela to use Tegerio's template more closely, so the wings were more articulated and had a second layer inside that would open when flying soo... uhmm... yeah. 😅 that parallelism got lost) and the wings of Philekdikisi are formed by the hands of Philomela as exemplified by the same number of fingers. Philekdikisi also sealed away completely any means of external winding and is far more rigid than Philomela, due to being a product of rage and rebellion.

Ehhh heh heh... eeehm.
So... What if there is someone who lacks social graces (though has gotten better through years of... difficult trial and error), and who happens to be an artist... (Albeit nowhere near as magnificent as HigthNekoHNZ) And who would use the funds from her artwork in an effort to become something physically beautiful herself, seeing that goal as just as important as any artistic accomplishment...?
Frankly, it feels like I'm in the same boat, are approaching the goal from the other side of the "boat", so to speak.
And not realizing that if I do accomplish such a thing, I might wind up in a similar cage, obligated to do nothing but encourage that beauty.
Hmn. The vicious rage thing is certainly something I've entertained, but... like Philodikisi, have a heart that has kept me from releasing it, instead, turning it inside, to shred my own essence. Admittedly, I doubt any revenge I could commit could be nearly so dramatic and visceral as a demonic rending after a similarly demonic transformation. > u <;
hee... I can even imagine a physical restriction akin to Philomena's cage and key. my crohns disease has left me pretty physically weak, and if I were to go through the surgeries needed to "fix" my flawed looks, it could cripple me further; I've had several medical surgeries anyway to either save my life or to stop rending pain... The doctors have told me they don't want to risk any further surgeries... Though I hope that cosmetic surgery is different enough from digestive surgery to bipass this concern. The amount of nip-tuck needed, however, might cause a strain.
Anyway, it could just be projecting, but if that's the case, you and the artist's work have created a meaningful, deep enough piece and concept to cause that to happen.

One more thing...
I am incredibly happy that you take the time to explain the complexities of the image. In a way, yeah, it's a shame that many individuals wouldn't be able to deduce these things on their own. but...
Well, for one thing, I would have never realized her chakras were framed as thus within the beautiful gilded frame, and in such a beautiful manner. I wouldn't have guessed that level of thoughtful sophistication on the object. It makes me wonder if similarly swirling, dipping, rising embellishments in final fantasy games (the newer ones) also have hidden meaning.
Anyway, the point here is, yes, the image is wondrous. But without your narration, I wouldn't have been touched so deeply by the piece. Too often people give more credit to artists than writers, especially in the furry "community". I want to thank you for taking the time to explain these works in such careful (and entertaining!) detail. I think that the *best* pieces out there, are ones for which there is both dedicated art, and dedicated writing. Thank you both for your hard work, and sharing such amazing, and touching, concepts.

The problem with the parallelism and real life...
...is that in real life it takes more than 1 hour of winding to obtain even 1 single and lonely minute of art appreciation.
It takes days and that does not account for the preparation before and after.
Also. Once art has been appreciated... sure it can be appreciated "serially" by many... but there will never be magic and art can never be free.
I've always said that Philomela is all about obsession.
But obsession does not exist by itself. And Philomela, being a character of a story can only portray one facet of obsession.
Think of it like 2 movies that seem complete opposite but are nearly identical except for the final step.
• Joker (2019)
• Birds Of Prey (2020)
they both portray the same kind of individual.
• lives in a world made up of their own fantasy.
• both movies alter what people see in order to conform to what the protagonist sees.
• both are dysfunctional and unrelatable beings.
The main difference?
• One decides that the pleasant face is a neat thing to use to cover up the fact that he lets go of his self loathing and decides to not care about anything else and enjoy his life, therefore becoming utterly inhuman.
• The other lets go of her pleasant face by facing the fact that she was right to loathe herself and she is indeed the cause of her own problems, and acknowledges that the pleasant face is her coping mechanism.
In the end? they both go in a rampage of destruction with a smile.
But one has decided to not grow up and chuck the last remnants that made him human because they weighted him and he does not like to "waste efforts" getting more decent and decides to live in the glory of people worshipping him for being a murderous incel asshole.
While the other acknowledges that she is the only one to blame for her own condition, and she knows full well she is a mess... and she seeks the help of others in a condition similar to her own to start taking a few steps towards becoming less of a murderous incel asshole.
Sooo... yeah same identical plot. Completely different take. Joker is (honestly) an insulting movie for me because it goes against everything i believe into. Birds of prey instead was actually fun, even if it pained me to see Harley try and keep up that façade like that. You can totally tell she is not an idiot. But she really tries to not think about what she is doing because otherwise her whole world would crumble down.
If you do not wish to subject yourself to the idiocy of Joker to juxtapose to the fun of Birds of Prey.... i would suggest checking the difference between "Me!Me!Me!" and "Daoko". They are essentially the same thing.
In Me!Me!Me! the idiot protagonist is an insult to all of humanity because he starts as a likeable fool that then starts blaming women for not giving "it" to him due to his abuse of porn. And not only sees all women as identical, but tries to wage an "epic" war against them the moment his incel mind decides his date (which is really trying to talk to him and show him empathy) is instead "the other" and in fact she is the main enemy of a bunch of women who are fighting him... cue him he promptly losing, shot down in such a way that shows how he sees himself as a "fallen hero"
In Daoko the girl is making up a complete world of perfection and fantasy to escape a shitty reality, and while she becomes enraged when seeing somebody actually enjoying the love she has always been denied all her life... she does end up (after a period of deep depression) asking help of others, after realizing her mistake.
So one is a vicious cycle that never ends, the other is a broken circle that leads to salvation.
It's still all about obsession. It's still all about one's passion. It's still all about the most important thing in one's life.
But only one leads to growth. The one where you open yourself to include other people. Be it because you do it for them. Or be it because you aske them for help. Or be it because you do it together.
Human beings are social animals. We do not exist in a vacuum. Telling other people they are "the other" and keeping them at a distance... means keeping a vicious cycle.
Yes. There are dangerous individuals. But a lot of times the danger only exists in our mind. And we twist others into something that is defined by a single label.
Shortcuts are useful when you know fully that they are shortcuts. Labels are not people. No single label expresses fully an entire person.
Unless you recognize that any label is just a shortcut and are prepared to assign a bunch to each person or swap them around as the person grows... you will twist yourself to the single label you have assigned yourself, and you will cease to be human. So. if you can shed labels as you grow and gain a bunch of them... do know that other people are the same.
A piece of art. Once made... stays like that. It is unchanging. You are not just a piece of art. You are a person. Sure. You can do art upon your body. But you are not the art upon your body. You are you.
And yes. If you become art. And if you define yourself just as the single piece of art... then yes. You will become an inhuman thing that is defined by a single label. Your "title".
But i suspect you're not the character of a story or a single piece of art. You are a human being. And therefore you have more than a shard of someone else's imagination to give yourself life.
So... good luck with your art project. But do never make the mistake to define yourself only as your art project. You're much more than that.

*nod* this... hit's home powerfully in a lot of ways. I won't lie... I cried a little. But it was all... due to being offered positive revelations after a rather long period of struggling with what to be versus what I was to become. Thank you for your insight. It will take time to make full use of it, I think... lots of thinking, meditation, and slow adjustment of, as you said, what is a complex identity and individual...
But I will be remembering what you said for a long time to come. And I think it's going to help a *lot*, in the long run.
Many blessings to you for your kindness and wisdom, and I hope they come soon and in abundance. ~ u ~

oh! yeh, i've seen it.
Nice visuals... but the story was weird and did not feel "right".
It's as if they tried to take the "real life shelock holmes" which inspired the stories of sherlock holmes... and put him in a story that seemed written for "sherlock holmes on drugs".
