quality is crap cuz I had to zoom in from the porch... it's storming out there!
Anyway, I say this Collared Dove is crazy cus he hasn't moved from that dead branch pile since Sunday Morning. (It's Tuesday now) Not an inch from that spot. Every time I walk outside he lifts his head and watches me... but i kinda don't want to disturb him but if he's hurt the neighbor cats will totally enjoy him as a play thing. On Sunday I spotted him because typically Doves don't perch so close to the ground.... either they're in the grass pecking for food, on a power line, or in a tree Cooing. So even on Sunday he was weird... but now... what's up lil birdy?

I've worked at our local wildlife sanctuary... they don't drive out to locations to rescue animals. They don't have enough money for that. People have to get the animal and transport it to them... and I don't own a car.. and a 4 hour bus ride to the center would kill the bird from the stress. Once the storm lets up I'm gonna head back out there too see why he's lingering. If I can and if he can... I want him to hang out where it is safer. Our neighborhood has a ton of feral cats and I'm surprised they haven't found him yet.
There are some shelters that provide free pick up if it sounds like an outstanding case that the citizen shouldn't handle by themselves...but then animal control should be called and they usually deliver said animal. But an injured small bird? Nah.
I went out to check on him armed with a towel so I can closely examine... but he ran off. So he's healthy enough to run form me he'll make it on his own. I think maybe he just has a few important feathers disarrayed and can't fly. He has full motion of his wings but unable to take flight. (My observation as it ran off) Perhaps a small fight with the local blue jays or crows... which can be very aggressive. His head feathers and body feathers looked in order so he wasn't sickly. I think it just thought that the log was a safe spot to recoperate at until he can fly again. Now he's hidden in our jungle-like backyard. No way for me to get him now... but a much better hiding place away from cats. Pigeons and their family when scared will sit still until the danger passes. If he's lucky he'll survive.
