Something people forget in their depictions is that the chain that bound Fenrir was ribbon-thin — barely the width of a single silver thread, an illusion of weakness, hiding the true strength and power in it that outshone that of the great beast’s. The Gods had used that cocksure attitude to seal his doom, challenging him where he stood to break the chain, and as the wolf who would swallow the world looked upon his prison, he laughed.
Theo did not have the same illusions. When he held the Thorn in his hands, the rusted, broken hand cannon barely even recognizable as a gun, he knew immediately the power that existed within the piece of scrap he’d lifted out of those waters. In his hand was the sealing of his fate, the portent of his doom, and the Awoken did not laugh at the state it had found itself in. He feared it.
This was his chain. These were his bindings. He would seek to cleanse it, to flip that power on itself, but he knew with deathly, grim certainty what failure meant for him. Even still, there was no turning back, not now, not until he claimed his prize or the bindings brought him to the ground.
The chain was around his throat from the moment he’d picked it up.
