The sneakernet mentioned here works a little bit different than the conventional physical sneakernet. Here's sort of how it works:
When traveling at faster than light speed it is impossible to transmit data in the sense that the data you transmit will get sent, but it will never arrive. All the sent data just lingers on in hyperspace. So no one actually trying to get a message across transmits while in hyperspace.
It however didn't take long before people tried receiving those lost messages while in hyperspace. Turns out that it is possible, with the right equipment on both ends of the transmission, but it's very much like grepping in a badly corrupted binary blob. Also, the received data couldn't possibly be traced back to it's origin. Over time this resulted in the creation of a sort of hyperspace-sneakernet where if you had a fairly good idea of what you were looking for and have plenty of time on your hands you could usually find what you were looking for.
