A familiar face in the Sea World Florida underwater viewing area is no more. She sadly died trying to give birth. I won't forget her. Her name meant "a crash of thunder".
Goodbye Taima

She was an incredibly stunning orca.

Lightning crashes, a new mother cries
Her placenta falls to the floor
The angel opens her eyes, the confusion sets in
Before the doctor can even open the door
Lightning crashes, an old mother dies
Her intentions fall to the floor
The angel closes her eyes, the confusion that was hers
Belongs now, to the baby down the hall

It makes me sick. It's just one of those things that makes me feel like dirt for weeks.
I don't get to go as often as I'd like to be honest. The last time I went was in January of this year. I'm not going to be bale to go back until next January. I'd been quite a bit before that, even though I live in Maryland.

What happened to her could have happened to any orca, captive or wild. Placenta previa- a known complication. Unfortunately they can't operate on cetaceans. They cannot be anesthetized. I'm not arguing that captivity is better than the wild, but if she'd been in the wild she wouldn't have had even half a chance to life as she did surrounded by help. She just couldn't pull through. It's serious when it happens to any mammal. Captivity did nothing to cause this. That much I know.
