Fine ballpoint sketch on printer paper, watercolours, an attempt at colouring a bright and pretty little bird.
Had to be careful with the washes as I didn't want to ruin the paper.

Oh man I love this. And not just because it's a bird either! It's simple, clean, and very vibrant, and the sky/background creates a perfect backdrop for all that orange. I'd so buy a set of watercolor pieces like this, frame them, and hang them up on my wall. <3 I'm a real sucker for simple and elegant animal portraits like this.
The fact that you were able to do this on printer paper is...awesome. The one time I attempted to do that it turned out horrid. How big is it in real life?

YEAH, wow. This is amazing! Whenever I used to try watercolorin' on printer paper, seems like it would warp terribly no matter how little water I loaded into the brush. O.O
Anyway, this is beautiful! A vibrant painting. I adore the texture you achieved. Just the right amount of texture vs smoothness.
Also, want to hug burd.

Yeah, the paper was trying it's best to warp by the time I'd loaded about three very careful washes onto the bird XD (There's like four layers of yellow, orange and brown on that thing). It's good quality printer paper, but I can't remember if it's on my 100gsm or my 80gsm...think it's the latter.
And thankyou <3

You can buy something called a cold-press watercolor board, which is a bunch of thicker paper specially designed for watercolor all glued down by the sides. You paint on it, and it doesn't warp! Of course, if you use a lot of water, and it looks like it's warping, take a break and let it dry. It might set into place after a day.
You can also prevent (some) warping on regular paper by taping it down really tight, on all sides, before you start. Of course, the thicker the material (especially smooth cold-press paper) the less it'll warp.

*nods* I'm a water fiend with watercolors. For some reason tend to prefer working in really light, diluted washes near the beginning, then have my thickest washes last. Even special watercolor paper tends to warp, with the edges taped down.
Because of this, I kinda have to work on thick illustration / multi-media board. Acrylic paper is really fun to work on too, and more forgiving if it gets warped. The paper can be bent back into shape pretty easily. c:
