Current headcanon: this album was recorded later than The Staircase Sessions, in the late 80s, but was released before it. The Staircase Sessions was really a studio jam session more than anything, but murky contract legalities and label politics meant the recordings eventually ended up in the hands of a budget label who released them semi-officially in the early 90s
