So this one failed for a number of reasons, but I still liked it well enough to post it.

What strikes me about this one is the realistically unrealistic tail treatment. If she lets her tail drop to a natural trailing position the tail scarf would go the wrong way and look wrong. So she must carry her tail up all the time. How unrealistic. Except that the Victorians really were into posture training much more severe than this. So it makes sense after all.
Oh, she, the gown, and your drawing are all lovely too, by the way. :)

I would think it would depend on species too, one way or another. Some tails are more flexible than others. Would the rules be based on your species, or would everyone be expected to meet some ideal, even if normally impossible for them?
Varying the rules by species would require a level of common sense rare in the world of fashion, I suppose.

At least as far as my little universe as written in the comic, fashion can vary a lot by species, but there are a lot of overlaps and commonalities within a basically 1880s fashion sense. The leopards do more with their tails than the foxes and wolves do, but I am writing my leopards as somewhat more elaborate anyway.
That said, this is not a char in Bone Shard, but I have it on the brain when I'm drawing the fashion stuff. :)

There's always that background in any world you're writing that's real to you. It's good to have it because it adds richness. It's a mistake to explain it all, though, and hard not to; you've gotta be in love with all the details of the world!
You're doing fine, in my opinion. Your world feels real and deep, but no data dumps.

That's the best way. It's blasted hard to do sometimes, though. Probably about the hardest thing you do, and you're not going to get too many people to notice it and admire it. Since if you do it properly, they'll never even notice.
I noticed, but then I kid myself that I'm a writer too. :D

amazing details with the tail scarf and whatnot. I noticed it without noticing the implications. :) looks like I must bow to hafoc.
come to think of it, what would horses do (if there are anthro horses in the bone shard universe?) with their tails which mostly consist of long hair?

There are horse people in the Bone Shard universe, though it's going to be awhile before any are shown 'onscreen.' They are members of the lower classes, and so all of the really picky social rules of the high society types won't apply to them to the same extent. Like all the other species in this universe, however, they have their own traditions and fashions. Tail braiding, cropping (and docking?) may be part of these.
