A quick step-by-step of how my pyrographic pieces get done - this one is on vegetable-tanned leather (do not burn on any other type of leather - it can be a definite safety hazard!). This piece is only 3x4".

I think the tutorial would be more effective if we could see the tools you're using- most peoplehave never heard of this stuff, myself included. :o

I agree with Growly - I wish I knew what half those things you're taking about are! Regardless, it's interesting to see your process. Very well done. I never would've guessed you created something that detailed on leather. o_o

Thank you for your tutorial. I've got to do this on my gunbelts - outside, with me upwind since I don't know how they were tanned.

Yes, be very careful - most leathers aren't vegetable tanned, so they release all sorts of heavy metals when you burn them. :< Make sure to get a good respirator and do it outside!

Thanks for your advice. I'll be careful; as I biologist I understand heavy metal toxicity and am aware of the hexavalent (carcinogenic) chromium and other heavy metals used to mineral tan leather.

Foxfeather? do you use Photoshop at all?, ever? to make pictures?

Generally no, I don't use computers for sketching or coloring. I do use photoshop to crop/resize/collage images, but not for actually making art. I'm not really all that computer saavy and I really enjoy traditional media. :)

Ok, i just asked because i have photoshop CS2 and want to create art on it but i dont know how to, Ambu said that she would help me but she hasnt been online for a while.

This is a highly useful tutorial :) I love learning new things, especially to do with assorted types of leatherwork.
I may have to try something like this sometime. Could brain-tanned leather be used? Just a thought, because of the absence of artificial chemicals.

I think brain-tanned would be safe, but when you burn anything, there is risk so I would wear a good mask regardless. You don't get this stiff sort of material with brain tanning though, it's very soft and pliable generally due to the process.
