I'm not working that saturday so anybody who wants a tour around the burg's north shore who's gonna be at the con should leave me a note or a comment or something.
Here's some tips and tricks for livin' high on the burgh while you're in for the con:
Cheap eats, check out the Rivers Casino. THeir all you can eat buffet is not to be beat and at 13-16 bucks a person you can't go wrong. It's within easy walking distance of the con and multiple hotels and you don't have to game to get in.
Best burgers on the north shore: Park House bar on East Ohio. It's right across the river from the con and the Falafel Master has great burgers and beer from 4pm until midnight
Want brews? PA doesn't allow the sale of beer outside of a beer seller and it must be bought by the case. The nearest beer seller to the con is on Federal Street. It's a 10 min walk or 5 min drive from the con. Any bar can sell six packs but they're way over priced.
"I want to cook in my room/eat cheap and healthy": There's a small market two blocks from the con called Rosebud. It closes early in the day and has a limited selection but what they do have is great. The strip is five blocks from the con (or less depending on what end of the convention center you're on) and has bars, and many great markets. Lotus asian market is the closest and anybody who's itching for mochi, pocki, ramune,, or other tasty asian treat will love it. Best sushi in that side of town is right next to it in Wholey's Foods!!
"omg I forgot my toilet kit/deoderent/soap/toothpaste!" There are three CVSs within a four block radius of the con and the nearby hotels.
"I'm itchin for some outdoors!": Venture outdoors and LL Bean take people on kayak tours all the time on the weekend. Venture is under the 6th street bridge by PNC park and let you rent a boat; LL Bean provides boats, paddles, life jackets, and transport (provided you can make it to their store, which isn't hard. Take the Ross Park Flyer bus) and leave for trips every saturday and sunday at 10:30 am.
Things to beware of in PIttsburgh:
The locals don't get it. They just don't.l If you wear a fursuit or other interesting gear be prepared for staring, pointing, or ignoring. The police are also twitchy...so be mellow is all I'm gonna say.
Stores close really early and open late for the most part in the golden triangle. Some don't open at all! Plan ahead on friday for getting goods for saturday and sunday!
The city is seriously lacking in public transport. The busses are iffy, there aren't any actual taxies for the most part, and the subway hardly goes anywhere. Wear comfy shoes because you'll walk everywhere!
Don't walk around by yourself in the hill district after dark.

Lived a year and a half in Pitt, Take the advice of not going out after dark alon seriously. Especially if you happen to be crashing with a friend..on the side of town that has Allegeny Appartments. ((aka Alleghetto Appartment)) Though if they cops are also twitchy with the students of the local culinary institute as well...we all carr around knife kits in full public :P
I live on that side of town (The NOrthside)
Many things have changed. Alleghetto no longer exists. Those appartments are closed down and all the art students/cooking students have been moved across the river. The federal street projects have all been knocked down and have no been replaced with high end town houses full of teachers, ministers, nurses, and drs. Cops roam the alleghany park constantly because of...well see townhouses above (We don't like people hangin out in front of our houses!)
Northside is much nicer than it was but like any city, roaming alone at night isn't the most kosher. I've never had a problem but I don't look for trouble either
