XD This here is one of my... developmentally challenged kenyan sand boas latching on to me instead of her food XD
Back in 2004 I saw some anery kenyan sand boas for sale at a local show for a great price! I'd been oogling them and thought I'd pick them up. The breeder informed me that they had a congenital problem - he hadn't known their mom was gravid and she hadn't had access to a good heat source so they had some neurological issues. They ate okay but they moved in a crazy loopy way.
Yes, they were literally and figuratively "half-baked" XD
He said if I was interested he had three more (who were worse) he'd give me for free. I thought sure! He made me promise not to tell anyone they came from him though, they looked so bad. One was lying on its back in the deli cup! ... not normally a good sign :P
But they turned out to be really healthy, vigorous muther@#$s! Totally loopy but ate like champs. However even though they were totally excited to eat they needed some help or they'd just latch into wherever and go at it rather unsuccessfully for a while :P For those who haven't seen a snake eat, if the snake latches on to the middle of a mouse, they kind of mouth their way over to the nose tip and then swallow the mouse. These guys would just keep trying to eat the pinky sideways for a while :P
So I would hold the pinky for them and try to aim the nose at their mouth. But they were LOOPY and when they tried to strike they'd go off at a right angle and often get my hand instead. XD But boy were they excited to get something! Grr grr kill kill! ... eventually I gave in and got tongs :P
The cool thing was as they grew they got less and less loopy. When they were two years old you could hardly notice it! I sold off all but one, Mr. Eff, because they were fun but I didn't need 5 XD Full disclosure of their condition to the buyers. They thought they were cute, even though they weren't terribly loopy anymore :B
Mr. Eff is now 6 years old (wow, time flies!) and not noticeably loopy at all!

Well.. I don't know.. The problem was I think it was she was 'midget' She never grew more then 2 and a half foot in 4 years. While the male was constantly growing.. I think she was inherently infertile. Saddly.. i would of loved to seen what the off spring would of looked like.
Yeah... for babies these guys' bites felt more like and adult cornsnake @-@ I didn't mind so much at this size but I am a little scared of being bit by an adult KSB D: I usually wear gloves when taking my girls out (once they're out they're not nippy tho), so far I've avoided being tagged by a big girl. *crosses fingers*
Agreed. I once had a friend who was licensed to handle the more expensive poisonous snakes and he brought a little... i think it was a type of boa snake, but it was really small and was gray and kind of reminded me of an eastern diamondback rattler. Although I know it wasnt one.
Miss that snake even though it was never mine.
And the kids arent afraid of much, I just think it would be a bit much for our landlord since we have rodents and then introduced a snake into the midst with the cats as well lol.

Boa? I don't think there are any venomous boas...? Still, sounds like a neat snake :) I personally don't trust myself with hots, too absent minded, but they are really cool.
And yeah, snakes can make renting a bit challenging XP I had to stick to fairly small, personalized landlords.

It might have been a boa, but not it wasnt poisonous. I held that thing for like six hours while he played the PS2 when it first came lol.
Long time ago, and he told me the snake was really expensive, like $150 or more. Which really sucked.
I miss it.. just .. had that connection you know?

Not being able to edit comments sucks.
I did catch a snake in my backyard once and took it to the vet. She was a poisonous snake but never bit me. Kinda small too. Never had her de fanged or anything and would usually walk around with... i guess you could say it was a rather large leather collar around my neck and she'd wrap herself around my neck with her head on my shoulder.
It freaked a lot of people out lol.

I have no idea.. I think the vet wasnt trained in identifying snakes much either. He kinda just went "yeap its poisonous and its a girl"... and then kinda sent me on my way @_@
Im not sure either.. I found her in Kansas when I was 16 so yeah.. i was kind of a stupid kid and wanted to piss my parents off (they HATED that snake and made it known that it was never to be on me in the house).
My friends thought it was neat and I named her Gorgita.. I have no idea why either.
I usually name my pets when the name just comes to me and fits the snake.
She never nibbled or bit me or anything and ate just fine, she loved curling up my arm and id sit around reading or something with her on me all the time.
I miss being able to have pets like that. I miss my iguana and my snakes =((
And yeah when it comes to pets im a bit crazy lol (seriously most folks would NEVER think of owning rodents with two cats in the house lol).

Oh man I've worked with a 'loopy' california king before. He loved to try and slither upside down to get every where and would always twist his body and head at weird angles. On top of that he REALLY liked to latch on to just about anything, and then just hang there. No chewing or moving, just.... hanging on.
Ffff I loved him so

Hah! You have to love curly-brained snakes. For all the nips and bites and occasional massive laceration...
I'd love to have a KSB - their fat, stubby bodies are adorable, but I have to say I'm happy just having a Children's - she can draw a fair amount of blood, but no more than a young cornsnake.

:D
I actually just fed her in the same way I had been doing for the past 3 times...right in her tank, she was by an area that was clear of substrate (I use shavings for her instead of sand). She tried to strike a couple seconds after I put the pinkie by her, but she missed...so I wiggled it around a bit, she seemed very interested. After about 5 minutes, I let the pinkie just sit and she went over to it and started to eat it x) Such a huge relief, I'm hoping she'll be a good eater after this :P

Whew, congrats!!! Hope she keeps it up :)
And yeah when I first got into KSBs I thought I was supposed to keep them on sand... yick. They were OK I guess but really it's not ideal. I've used carefresh (paper stuff), vermiculite, and aspen, and I think those all work (though I don't like paper much cuz it seems to tend to get gross). Really anything that holds their burrows is good. Currently I'm an aspen kick :)

I've randomly seen many of your snakey pics on the front page.
And actually clicked on this one from the link in your latest pic.
Cute story. But i was just wondering if you named him Mr. Eff after the doughboy in JTHM.
Just curious. It's always nice to meet a fan of the series.
