making my last submission really got me into production mood^^
this song was originally recorded in 2018 (complies with rule 3 and 7 btw) and is special to me for various reaons.
I've only ever taken one music commission which I received an ukulele for. (it's one of those cheap ones you can get for 20€).
the inspiration for the song was to use only sounds that came from the ukulele. I eventually ended up adding a recording of me humming as well.
but yeah, everything you can hear in this track came from an ukulele (and my voice).
I basically recorded a lot of different percussive hits, melodies and chords into ableton and started processing the samples in a way that made sense.
some sounds were pitched down (kick and sub bass by 24 semitones), others thrown into a sampler with waveform looping in order to get a new sound out of it (pads).
for the contest entry I changed the song structure, re-recorded some parts and reworked the mixdown.
latter was a huge pain due to extremely resonant frequency spikes that unfortunately come from the ukulele as its not the highest quality instrument. I tried to get rid of as much unwanted content as I could with a dynamic resonance suppressor but this step is always a tradeoff with how "full" the element sounds. plus the most resonant frequencies usually bleed into the spectrum anyway.
there's also a lot of noise in the recording but it is what it is and I think it adds to the vibe.
hope you'll enjoy!
