Depends on the grade you want. HGs are pretty open for firsts, but I'd say stick with newer. The Wing series has been getting new releases and all have been quite nice thus far. The Origin line is also quite good with lots of accessories and options for each kit.
MGs I'd say start with something more simple but nicer. The Hyaku Shiki and Alex 2.0 versions are both good. I've built both. Save getting a transforming kit until you've built a few. Also, watch reviews for kits. Those can give you good ideas of what you want to grab. MechaGaikotsu on YouTube does great reviews and I agree with him on 90% of the reviews for things I have that he reviewed. I say 90 as his opinions and bias sometimes get in there and my own opinions get affected a bit by nostalgia factors.

Mecha is who i watch and i love his reviews. Well the easiest kit to get would be the hg RX-78-2 its simple and looks great

Hobby shops like Hobby Lobby or HobbyTownUSA tend to have them. If those are not around, there are several good sites to look at. I use Newtype HQ as my main online source.
