This scutum (pl. scuta) is of the "Augustan" type, a transitional shield constructed of wood, raw hide and linen with period milk paints and waterproofing. The boss (umbo) is steel that has been tinned for rust proofing and is engraved with figures from the ancient pantheon of relevance to me (Hermanubis [syncreatic god in Roman/Ptolemaic Eqypt], ), based on my interpretations of the Tyne boss artifact.
