A Mermaid's Song Sinks Ships - BY ArtsyOT
ArtsyOT indulged me in explaining a little confusion that people have between mermaids and sirens.
Mostly because it seems like (most probably due to Disney doing it's very, very, very bad job once again) people think a mermaid's song is supposed to be a song of lure that makes people fall in love.
That's sirens.
Also people think that harpies are supposed to look like beautiful birds women.
That's (once again) sirens. But this time Disney had nothing to do with it.
They just devastated the beautiful cautionary tale of the mermaid reversing the meaning and making it sound like the desired outcome was actually the undesired one that people were cautioned against.
You know? falling in love with the man from this meme https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/dist.....cted-boyfriend and giving him everything without getting anything back, until the guy gets another girl and marries her instead? That kind of "don't get swindled" cautionary story?
But i guess Christianity had already destroyed it in the Handersen tale by telling girls that they would get a soul if they did that, otherwise they would stay soul-less.
But that would get in the way of my pure and deep hatred of Disney and we can't have that, right? π When Disney is not the full culprit or anything, i still want to mention they still did a very bad job by taking a lot of cautionary tales and reversing them into "yeah you should totally do that, and maybe you'll get lucky". So i... MIGHT... be a teensy tiny little wittle bit pissed at Disney in a slightly biased way.
The confusion between sirens and mermaids actually predates Disney and Christianity by a lot (dammit! Why? I had the perfect culprits! Megacorp inc. AND religion! What's NOT to hate about those two?) as with most ancient myths they are neither fully good and fully evil, and NOT coming from greece/italy they are also NOT all aboutromance love sex rape (and victim blaming).
In any case. A mermaid's song has never had any luring power.
They "just" sink the ships and they recover the bodies.
What happens to the bodies is... a bit of a mixed bag.
Mermaids were (in the persian and african myth) mostly a "personification" of storms. So, most of the people recovered were just... you know... mangled corpses. Implying they ate them.
In the southeast asia the mermaid myth is a "personification" not of the storms themselves but of the sea. So she has both the uncontrollable rage and the calm lure.
I gave Kaimana a pacific-based name to hint at the fact i do not wish for her to be just a ball of rage and destruction, but also somebody who can connect people and (in general) a more well rounded character that can be both evil and good.
But... you know... she can still blast a rock or two with thunder if she wants or needs to.

Mnh. I myself am sore at disney for a completely different reason... A reason that honestly a lot of megacorp inc. folks tended to spew, if they had any moral lesson at all they felt like saying...
"Do your best, and you will undoubtedly succeed!"
"Just be yourself, and you will find that people adore you!"
"Doing your best not enough? um... Wishing! Try WIshing Stars!"
"... still not working...?
... u-uhm...
M-mmnh... Oh!
Maybe you're not *ACTUALLY* wishing/working hard enough. It's totally your fault. :B"
Yeah...
I had plenty of cases where being trans female ended up sabotaging my well being, because I was different.
Even when I had nearly died a time or two from not making enough income, and thus, treating my jobs lethal-serious, the upper management always found ways to quietly shunt me out the back, while gas-lighting me into believing it was my fault. Only one boss was like "Look. we're firing you because you have crohns disease, and your periodic wandering off to half-collapse until the pain goes away was freaking out both customers and employees alike. you make a bad image. we have to let you go.
.... Mmmmaaybe try unemployment...?"
So... I now rely on disability checks to survive. It wasn't until a drug-assisted therapy session that I realized hey... I acted feminine... sounded feminine... and was androgynous, but look juuuust male enough not to pass... and we can't have that now, can we? This led to shunning, which, after being called a faggot and generally being ostracized from early youth on up, even before realizing what I was doing... trying harder and harder to follow disney's message of "just be yourself" until it was literally sabotaging me...
Well...
it left me profoundly embittered.
The messages disney throws at people nowadays are meant for the majority of middle class and higher kids who will have fair opportunities, and whom don't have conditions that are considered "unusual"...
Things are getting better about that nowadays, the whole acceptance thing... but the work standards are just as harsh, especially as unemployment rates mean companies can afford to be more and more choosy and abusive with the employees they *do* have...
Meaning that, wholesale... wishing hard... trying hard... and being yourself... will do nearly nothing for you, unless you were already positively aligned in the "successful" minds eye to begin with.
I was raised on Disney Movies by my grandparents, and they rather fully destroyed me in the long run. *Sighs, shrugs, sets down the mic, and walks off...*

No. Be yourself never actually works. Can confirm that. π
It's not just "successful" people who say that.
You can't ever show weakness.
You can't ever be angry for something.
You can't ever make mistakes.
If you show weakness, make a mistake, or be angry for something, people will hammer on you and point at you.
It's why i wrote this journal a while ago. https://www.furaffinity.net/journal/9587661/
The first thing that parents should teach to children is: "In theory, practice should work like theory. In practice it does not."
The second thing parents should teach children is: "If you already exceed expectations, you have nothing to learn. So do not be ashamed of your failures, but use them to teach yourself."
Or basically: "Failure is not an option... it is mandatory".
But in today's society you will be hammered for failing completely random expectations that people will throw on you.
You will be shamed. You will be punished, even if you are the victim.
You can't ever show who you are, because people will judge you for your worst moments.
