Ocean Variant Sirids
Ocean Sirids are marine mammals that reside in deep bodies of water, hiding in large coral reefs on the ocean floor. Despite being mammals, they have evolved gills that remain hidden underneath their manes. They have many traits of other animals, a canine like face, sharp warthog like tusks, a shark tail, bovine nose and raptor claws.
Their origin is unknown but many researchers theorized they were created artificially and were able to thrive and evolve in their new environment. Ocean variants tend to have very bright patterns with many different spots or stripes to blend in with their coral habitat. Sirids tend to each large marine life such as tuna, whales and sharks. They tend to leave brightly coloured tropical fish alone as they seem to enjoy their looks, sometimes becoming possessive of them.
Sirids secrete a deadly neurotoxin from their mouths that paralyze their prey upon contact. They will create a fog of their saliva around themselves to keep other predators away from their homes. Most often they use their deadly bite for hunting, their large tusks allow them to bite deep into the blubber of whales and paralyze them instantly.
Dolphins are their most common rival, Sirids tend to remain very solitary and if a pod of dolphins decided to attack, they would stand a very little chance, however their large raptor like claws provide them with protection to their underside, and will flash them around to remind dolphins to leave them be.
The ocean variant is roughly the size of a large bull, weighing anywhere from 500-700 kg, and standing up to 7’8” on their hind legs.
Oceans Sirids will often migrate to land during mating season, males tend to have one on one confrontations by biting at each other's faces in an attempt to break the other male’s tusks. Sirids mate for life, so when one female is won over, no other male has an attempt at courting them. Sirids will stay on land to raise their young until they are ready to be on their own, the parents will return to the ocean and the young will live on land for several years until they’re fins are strong enough to swim.
It has been observed that males will often buddy up when they fail to court a female and will actually have a relationship with each other, females have been seen doing this as well but it is much more rare.
Desert Variant Sirids
Desert Sirids were discovered a lot sooner than their aquatic cousins. They can be found in large mud pits in desert oasis’ or hiding deep beneath sand dunes. They only ever come out at night to avoid burning their feet on the hot sand, although during the monsoon seasons they can be out at any time of the day.
Now unlike their ocean counterparts, they have no gills, they simply keep their noses coated in mud with their nostrils sticking out to breath. With the thick coat of mud on their fur they are able to remain cool and it provides camouflage from other predators. Desert Sirids have evolved a thick scale plating along their arms and legs to allow for better protection from attackers and rival Sirids. They tend to be a lot more territorial due to their barren wasteland and will hog mud pits.
The Desert variant will often have a harem rather than one mate, a male will keep many females in his company and vice versa, the alpha is the one that decides who and who can’t reside in their mud pits/territory. Desert Sirids were observed to have even more same sex relations than their cousin, but the alpha is still in charge of who can be together.
They also secrete a neurotoxin like their cousins but produce much less as they do not need to coat their nests in it due to remaining in large groups and their prey is much easier to hunt. Despite living most of their lives buried in sand or mud, they are adequate swimmers and when it is monsoon season, they will swim north and raise their young in forest oasis’. Unlike their cousins, they are much smaller possibly due to being on land and food is more scarce in the harsh warmer months.
Sirids are a species inspired by my love for Monster Hunter and are meant to fit in that universe but can be put wherever.
