Chapter 2 - Some Slight Mutations
Part 1
David found himself staring into darkness. He could see the ground beneath him and outwards about six feet, but it was just an ordinary dark tiled floor. He couldn’t see anything in particular other than the floor. He thought he had passed out, but he could swear that he was wide-awake.
“So you’ve lost control already?” called out an all too familiar voice. The voice echoed, but it sounded like it was coming from somewhere nearby. He looked around him, and he found he was completely alone.
“What are you talking about? I haven’t lost control, I just passed out I think. I probably just overexerted myself, and my body couldn’t take it so soon.” David said. He knew his mouth was moving, but his words were slow to come out. The very sound of his voice was surreal, as if it weren’t coming from his mouth but instead from the world around him.
“Overexerted yourself?” the presence laughed, “You weren’t even close to overexerting yourself! Trust me; I am far more in tune with your inner workings than you are.”
“If that wasn’t overdoing it, then I don’t know what would be.”
A small fox appeared like an apparition in front of him, and ran towards him swiftly until it was right in front of him. Its colors and patterns imitated his own perfectly. It even had three tails like he did. It was sort of like looking in a mirror in an eerie way.
The fox spoke to him and immediately David identified this fox as the other presence, “You’re right, you don’t know. You have no idea just how far we could go or what we are capable of now.” David knew his mouth was wide open in shock as it spoke. He was certain that he was dreaming now.
After a few seconds of staring David continued, “And you do know? I find that really hard to believe.”
“Of course I know!” The fox exclaimed, “The problem that arose was that you stopped too abruptly, not that you overdid it.”
“How is that even possible? Unless you can explain it, I won’t believe you.”
“Have I told you just how trusting you are?” The fox said insulted.
“What? You expect me to believe the little fox that lives in my head?”
“I only want a little respect.” It said turning away.
“Right sure, so how do you know that I can do more?”
“Easy, that nanotechnology that Calvin gave you is boosting your systems, which were mutated during the operation. The nanobots repair everything, and can even boost your strength by acting as muscle strands.” The fox explained intentionally trying to confuse David by talking fast.
“Is that what happened?”
“Not entirely. There was also an anomaly in your heartbeat.” The fox stated.
“What kind of anomaly?”
“A drastic increase in its pace brought on by a split in effort. That increased blood-flow by a lot, which in turn allowed more oxygen to reach your muscles and the nanotechnology which increased their performance.”
“Wait, a split in effort?” David asked surprised.
“Yeah, your heart was working half as hard as normal, and half of its work was taken up by another pump.” The fox said trying to avoid eye contact with him. It appeared to know what was going on, and didn’t have any intention on going into detail.
“Another pump?”
“I don’t know, it might have been the nanotechnology trying to increase your blood-flow. I can’t explain it. But I have a good feeling that that chip is directly involved. It was putting a lot of effort into something while you were going off on your spree.” The fox clearly knew more, but David didn’t want to pry any further. He had noticed how mean he had sounded, and he knew how pushy he was acting. He knew he was going insane when the thought of apologizing to himself crossed his mind.
He snapped himself out of his thoughts of pity and continued, “Right, so is it that I don’t have any limits now or something?”
“You have limits, but you were nowhere close to reaching them.” The presence stated, “I can help you push your physical boundaries, but you’ll have to push your mental limits. From what I can tell, I can control you only when you are mentally exhausted or in the case of your tails, not fully aware of my intervention.”
“You would help me?” David asked disbelievingly.
“Do I sound like someone who would try to harm you? You and I are one and the same. Anything that slows you down slows me down too. I’m going to help because it wouldn’t make sense to try and hinder you and I need something to do around here.”
“How do you know that you can actually control me?”
“Well, it certainly wasn’t you who caught that flying weight was it?”
“That was you?”
“Like I said, I can take control. But I can only do that after you have become completely out of tune with your own body. You went numb and you couldn’t control yourself. So I stepped in.”
He considered slapping himself straight later for what he was about to say.
“Thanks.” He said with a hint of an apologizing tone.
“It’s about time I got a thank you! Now, will you thank me for saving your life?” The fox said trying to drag this victory out.
“Uh, thanks for saving me.”
“You’re welcome. You know, I’m not such a bad mental fragment once you get to know me, which shouldn’t take too long, since we’re sharing the same body.”
“Alright, so let’s get to know each other. But first, where are we exactly?”
“My home, your subconscious-mind.”
“Not much here is there?” David asked looking around again.
“No, no there’s actually a lot going on down here!” the fox exclaimed, “You just can’t see everything because you’re too used to your conscious mind.”
“You’re quite the psychologist. And you’re really intelligent, for a fox-”
“Thank you! You’ll figure out eventually that not all animals are stupid.” the fox said.
“So, why do you sound exactly like I do?”
“Well, I did fragment off of you. You didn’t think that I would sound like someone else did you?”
“Well, it would clear up some of my confusion.”
“Okay. I’m not too creative, but I can work on something. Honestly, I’d rather not sound exactly like you either, but I haven’t heard a voice I like yet.”
“Is it possible to clear this all up before this dream ends?”
“I’m already listening to your environment. Even though we are unconscious, that doesn’t stop me from using our senses.”
“So is there anyone out there?”
“Sure, plenty of people.”
“Any ideas as to who exactly?”
“Dr. Calvin, the Director- hmmm, I think that’s Luke and Karen.” The fox said naming off people who David couldn’t hear or see.
“Speaking of names, do you have one? And don’t tell me your name is David.”
“Hang on there’s still more people. There’s several voices I don’t recognize, but by their terminology, I’d guess they’re doctors. And then there’s also one other voice, but it isn’t like the others. I don’t think anyone else can- Oh, you know what? I know her!”
“Who is it?”
“Oh no! I like this, it’s going to be a big surprise!”
“Come on tell me!”
“I think I’ve decided on a voice too.” The fox said as its voice changed and became more feminine.
“Oh you’ve got to be kidding me- Female?”
“Yes, and you may call me Carol.” The fox said as the darkness swept down on him suddenly like a heavy fog.
So, I hope you enjoyed the first part of chapter two. I'll remind you that this won't make sense unless you read the other parts first...
If you have never read an actual novel before, you probably don't know that italicized text is for internal thoughts and comments. (I apologize if the tabs, center aligns, or italics don't show up for you... I've been having problems with that recently)
PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK!!! The direction of this story is already laid out, but comments might help me decide on the little twists in the story!!!
I've developed an amazing hook to get the readers' attention. In the picture you'll find text (obviously), and the text is from the chapter. The same goes for all of the other parts/chapters I've written. However (here's the ultimate hook!) Not all of the text in the picture shows up in the story. In fact it will foreshadow parts of the story to come (unless I find more entertainment value in flashbacks, but that hasn't happened yet.)
I recommend that you read the other parts before reading this part, but it is entirely up to you:

wow, you really think so? :)
well, sorry to say that this was the last part I made for this version. And I haven't made it much further than this in the latest version either XD
BUT, if you are interested in seeing the improvement in the latest version, I'll be happy to direct you to my DeviantART page!
The story behind that is that FA and DA use different types of code to create italics, bold, strikethrough, etc... and I was getting tired of going through every chapter twice to change the code! :P
I'm also terrible at finishing things, so it might be a while before the next part comes out, just FYI, but I've just noticed that I have an almost complete chapter six prepared (the newer version doesn't split chapters into parts, so that's another three whole parts for you, maybe four in the near future)
HERE YA GO! :D
