From 2020
Well, this one was while I was trying to sort out things to sell on my etsy shop (timberwillow.co.uk) I wanted to have a practice at doing a sketchy version of my husband
ellis171 who typically likes being depicted as hunky and beefy, so I went for Smol and chibi. This ended up on a card that I gave to him to perk him up during 2020.
He did turn out a cutie though. XD

That would be amazing!! I did intend for it to go on greetings cards, but didn't think it'd go over well. Thank you so much for saying that though, this was the style I wanted to play with last year and will keep playing with it in the future. I have a few more to upload of these but with my current image dump it'll come nearer the end. XD
Well I mean if not this character then some other one, the fact it is cute, it will sell. but like with all cute characters it needs a good gimmick.
Pusheen: Cattitude + cat tropes + ideas + basic shape, cute
Sheldon, Tiny dino who thinks he is a turtle: Small size, big heart + big ideas + ambition & tenacity, cute
The Noodles @earth3128 on twitter small noodle dragons + big ideas + situations + hijinks , cute
So what would your gimmick be for a character and that would sell to like kids or the kid at heart?

Now this is the kind of question I live for! I had to reread it to Ellis over a cup of tea. It coincides with what we had been talking about the night before but we hadn't gone to that level of question to really start digging into a character with a personality. I suppose whenever I draw a character like my Boba, she's super bubbly and mischievous and constantly gets into trouble - Ellis is lazy, obsesses over Ketchup and thinks cable ties and duct tape solve all problems.
A new stand alone character might work where I can really flesh out their personality, but with where we were yesterday, I was looking for something to create with my community. We made a character previously that they named BanaBoo, somewhere crossed between a banana, my gryphon, a llama and a crocodile and they started diving into what it should be doing and made it a fun event. At this point I don't think I want to go into the realm of cats only because there are so many of them, llama/alpaca has alpacaso, there are dinosaurs, and then the plethora of characters from Tokidoki and Sanrio. Then again, I suppose so long as its different and unique enough it may still work as one of these other species.
You've seriously got my brain whirring and I want to dive into this and start more brainstorming. Thank you so very much for such a thought provoking message - its just what I need!

Glad I could be of help in some way to make you brain reach new heights.
I agree, we already have cute creatures like I mentioned, and I am sure others; that said then say, what creature can be made cute, that is other rarely used or could be made popular? An what is in a name? best when it can be easy to remember, & rolls of the tongue.
Had to look up Tokidoki and Sanrio yeah never got into Hello Kitty
For me the first that comes to mind is a Honduran White Bat, when drawn chibi it can be really cute,(not like its already small stature did not already make it cute), and it has easy to remember nicknames: cotton ball, puffball, or marshmallow, or if you make a group of them, they do not necessarily need names if you make unique marks for each character, like as seen in The Noodles.
Their are other options and maybe even Sorbet Jungle already has a cute selection for inspiration.
Avians, cervines, canines, vulpines, otters, fictional sergals, etc. for some reason a Sunflower Sloth comes to mind,
The possibilities on the species end are almost limitless, but i hope your new ambition and art endeavor goes well for you.
