Brain Displacer - By MsMeowgi
MsMeowgi drew yet another playable race from my setting, which these Patreon Rewards are helping Populate! This time: The Brain Displacer
Brain Displacers are a fairly known and feared race of my world. They are born with an ability that lets them teleport where somebody's brain would be and connect to that body. Taking the place of the brain.
This makes them excellent spies, obviously, and frightening killers.
Will all Brain Displacers be only spies and killers?
Who knows.
But people will not very willingly get near somebody who can literally sap the memories from your brain and then take the place of said brain once they have learned all they can from who you were.
Sleep tight.
They don't do it while you're awake.
You might resist.
So, for now, this is the only kind of job that society will "allow" them, to take.

Heh.
This creature reminds me of the "Astral Spike" in the videogame called "Control"... (Great game if you like 3D Metroidvanias, I highly recommend it).
Anyway, The creature itself is an Astral predator which feeds on, and is attracted by, active thought. The creature looks like... an unsettling mass of writhing, vibrating, and chaotically shifting geometric shapes, which sometimes flicker into gorgeous looking fractaline patterns, before whipping into a juddering mess that is surprisingly unsettling to watch for a mere geometric being. It's theorized that the shapes are actually just astral matter being perpetually scrambled and repositioned by the extradimensional thoughts of the creature, said matter making them almost invincible to all be the most obscenely powerful, piercing, raw, pure FORCE...
Anything else is simply tore up and added to the scramble of matter that either becomes it's carapace, or is violently flung aside after some time of rapid scrambling...
If you *Do* manage to use a decimatingly strong attack, most of the matter is disintigrated, leaving a dark, blurry, hard to percieve orb, like a hole in reality... appropriate enough, given all it does... that will simply hover until it recovers, before resuming it's juggernaut's chase towards sentient prey...
Now. one particularly horrific example, was an astral diver who encountered such a being, and was having it's thoughts devoured, the effect looking and sounding like an ear-splitting screech, and violent, flickering lights erratic enough to risk causing seizures even to a non-susceptible individual like myself.
The astral diver attempted to flee by leaving the astral realm while it was feeding on him.
Over the next several hours, he complained of increasing levels of migrane pain and blindness, until, during a medical examination, the astral spike tore itself out of his head and began it's mad scramble towards the medical staff in the room.
The creature, a terrifying thought destroyer... had found a way into *real* space by feeding on the thoughts of the retreating diver.
Anyway, I won't spoil any more, but the rest of the game is jam-packed with fascinating and frightening concepts like that. give it a try some time, if you are able. ~u ~
