I did this because I wanted to know if it was possible to make a decent anthropomorphic character out of toothless. What do you think?
this is just a rough sketch, into scraps it goes!

I DIG THIS.
Mkay, I've been a fan of How To Train Your Dragon since before anybody even knew about it, I was like 10 when I got the book-- and I was so mad that they changed EVERYTHING except for the names of people and the island. When I say everything, I really mean everything. Toothless was originally a tiny little green dragon, common and juvenile. Then for the movie they turned him into a super-rare super-special cat with wings. ADORABLE, of course, yes, that was my weakness. Toothless's design is awesome.
/crap
Now, for the art, haha, I know it's just a little thang you did to test, but I really like it like this! The 'dredlock' sort of thing going on really brings out a more natural but original flair, (and believe me, I'm tired of seeing all these... sparkle Night Furies flying all over) and I can also appreciate it when somebody doesn't make everything buff and perfect-bodied. He's very cute as he is! <3 I like the rounded figure.
All-in-all, even though I really don't care for over-hyped movie fanart, I would keep working with this! :> Looks great Patto, good ideas here.

It is an interesting take on the concept of "anthro Toothless" but there are a couple things that bug me. The "hair" which seems to be Draenei-like "hair tentacles" (don't know what else to call them. That's what they look like to me!), and the bit of a pot belly. I am not saying he should be slim and buff by any means, but having the belly that big just seems off to me for some reason.
I like this take on him, but I'm concerned it's not your take. You've got a very unique style and I feel like you're restraining yourself to Dreamworks' interpretation when you could be individualizing him even more.
My opinion on the hair is that while "dreads" are better than human hair some furries or scalies have no hair at all and I think that maybe you should try it with nothing more than his ears.
As for the figure, I think it's suiting. His role in draconic combat never seemed to be that physically taxing short of his agile flight. But since he's been chowing down with the humans and not getting much exercise lately, I can totally see him being a little on the pudgy side. Buff is intimidating and Toothless is anything but.

Anthro Toothless isn't really my cup of tea, but even with that said, it's the first true 'anthro' Night Fury I've seen, and I have to give credit where credit is due. I'm kinda fond of his arm, as you translated it really well from his normal style to this anthro style. Not really sure how I feel about the 'hair. Part of me says 'hell yeah' the other part says 'umm no'... and I can't tell which is louder.
All in all, kudos and A for effort, but I much prefer your regular renditions of Toothless to this anthro one.

The thing that I kind of find funny about this design is that I like it, but I don't think it's... Toothless, if that makes sense? Could be an anthro version of his dad or sth. Either way, I love the dreadlocks, but it just reads as too old for Toothless for me: I got the impression off the movie that Toothless was relatively young for a dragon.
(In my heart of hearts, I think it would be hilarious if Toothless was really a girl. I mean, come on, they've all done the whole 'EXTREMELY DANGEROUS: KILL ON SIGHT' thing for ages; I'm wondering if they even know how to tell one dragon's gender from another. :V)
...Anyway, as a result of the combination of the thought processes of the above two paragraphs, here are my suggestions/thoughts:
a. Not sold on the way the head seams with the neck and body; I think the neck is a little too thick for the width of the shoulders you've got there (even accounting for style/preserving some of the original anatomy, it still looks a little odd to me. Maybe without the dreads...?). It feels a little too "MY HEAD IS PASTEDE ON, YAYE," but that's just IMO.
b. The overall impression is of an older character-- twenties, thirties-- than the juvenile I imagine Toothless would be. It might be because of the burly upper arms or the belly, or it could also be the clothes he's wearing. If you slapped him into a hoodie and a gangsta hat he'd seem a little younger.
c. Also I can't get the idea of a little girl!Toothless with dreadhair up in pigtails running around. I want to see a family of Night Furies now. 8D

this one is hella cute. thus far anthro toothlesses haven't turned out all that appealing but this one's pretty adorbs! especially the arms and how you gave him a lizardy gut!
and i totally tried it too <_< but i took the human-y route as fan art for a friend's story. this makes me wanna TRY anthro again.
