Depends on your PoV of "cruel" we could always render them unconscious first before she ingests them. Lack of oxygen would ensure they stay that way, so aside from the occasional "flinch" of pain as her stomach does what it does. they'd pretty much just be "meat" unless she enjoys hearing them scream
