TwitterWhen animals considered to be "prey" by the apex predators of the world begin to band together for safety, where does it leave those caught in between?
Namely, a pair of pine martens, carnivores and flesh-eaters themselves, but small enough to be considered food for the bears, wolves and gluttons of the forest and field. They're on a journey to seek sanctuary with the rabbits, squirrels and other prey that have gathered to Oren--but they don't know if welcome or condemnation will meet them.

Well, animals DO breed more often and would have litters almost yearly. Seeing it from that angle, there would def. be less coddling/encouragement of familiarity. Especially in a world like this where they could come down to if one of them lives the other dies type story arches (this competition between them goes for everything). Not to say that's where this leads, but it's a much more cut-throat "place" than humans would be used too.
This implication is honed not just by his answer, but the framing of the whole page as well :""D.

apparently according to word of god (author) no they dont breed anymore than the prey or vice versa in this universe. It's probably just a Martin thing as they tend to be more independent or atleast from their view you call everyone by name after a certain age regardless of affiliation, who knows. Time will tell im sure.
Yeah. Rask's dad is gonna die, as soon as Hemlock catches up. The presence of Rask all by himself has caused enough turmoil in the valley, and he came with the specific intent of trying to fit in and had multiple people vouching for him. Yarrow...damn. He's already killed one of the valley dwellers. I don't see any way Rask is going to be able to save him, aside from telling Yarrow to run, now. Run far, run fast, and don't ever look back.
This is just my long-winded guess.
I feel like Sprig is going to be close by, watching this from a hidden vantage point. Rask will more than likely tell his father he needs to keep running until he can smooth things over with Oren and the others. Sprig would then nonchalantly meet up with Rask, asking him if he found anything. Rask, wanting to protect his father, would say no in confidence.
This could possibly create a rift between them and Sprig will feel the need to tell Oren that Rask found something and is trying to hide it. Hemlock, always trying to see the bad in everything predatory, might stir up the others into a blood raged frenzy, sending them on a witch hunt after both Rask and Yarrow.
OR
Hemlock stumbles onto them, but rather than engage, she wants to see what Rask will do. Will he kill or chase off his own father or try to help him escape?
I'd imagine if he chose the latter, it would fully fuel her disgust for Rask and she'd never give him that one ounce of trust he's hoping to get.

The scene in panel 3 is heartwarming, that's probably the first time in a long while Rask has been able to smile. It's worth savouring those moments. This is story is really becoming more enthralling with each page. I can sense a conflict coming with from Hemlock or his Dad, that's making this more intriguing. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
