it is, japanese folklore and mythos revolving around horror stories and monsters. Inteest in it has more to do with an interest in onsters, myths, and crytozoology though, and the term seems to be becoming more genralized, the same way guro is used for gore, and yaoi for gay stuff
on a side note (not being a dick0 but I love how people complain about the whole japanese influence thing,it's nothing new,has been goingno since the seventies at least, and america has been influencing Japan just as much, if not more.as for negative impact or influence, personaly i think it has a lot more to do with who is being influenced and how much effort they are putting inot being a "weeaboo" or whatever. I have loved anime, and have been activly into it since 7th grade, roughly 15 years ago.I was never comfortable with the term otaku and preffered to just like it...obsessivly,as I went along I bothered to take in as much information about it as possible, study the methods or stry writing, the cultures behind it etc. Most examples of Japan fucking up the way american culture, animation etc is, are the results of idiots either takingthings at face value and bolstering steriotypes, or being those pretentious naciess who insist that manga be pronounced (maa-nga)
also also anyone who complains about japanese animation needs to not be watxching cartoons at all
half of the shows from the eighties were at least partialy animated by japanese artiists, inspector gadget, thundercats, the real ghostbusters, heathcliff, the list goes on

Fffff; I have some things I can post (plenty of things) maybe if we both keep posting our critters people will get the idea?
I shuffled around the site a bit and although I saw a lot of awesome critters there was the occasional thought of 'what is this doing here?'
I think I posted a journal too, I can't quite remember it was so long ago aaaah.
That site needs to be more popular.
