Such forests, once spanning the entirety of the island have been reduced to isolated fragments by oil palm, pulp & paper concessions and other forms of human development. These fragments have become the last bastions of species like the Sumatran tiger and Sumatran elephant and may be completely destroyed if current trends continue. Destruction of peat forests also releases massive amounts of stored carbon, making Indonesia the 4th largest emitter of greenhouse gasses.

Destruction of these sanctuaries of life affects us all. Help put a stop to it by making conscious buying decisions. Buy FSC certified paper products and at all costs and avoid buying products which contain palm oil (which also happen to be terrible for you). Educate yourself and support your government in regulating the importation of products which negatively affect endangered species.
