To help with the bleeding, you could pick up a cheap shitajiki board if you have a little japanese bookstore near you. I don't think they make anything similar for more traditional bookstores.
A shitajiki or pencil board is a thin, flexible sheet of plastic that you can put between the sheets and stop the bleeding. Sharpies will stain the board, but at least it won't hit the pages behind it.
