Before being orphaned and "adopted" off-world, Mike Leek had gone hunting with his mother several times. Once a griff (a local predator) surprised their hunting party and attacked Mike. It was a close thing, but Mike learned why they always had someone carrying a spear, even when everyone else was carrying guns.
