<Poké Combat Academy, Entrance - Tuesday: 4:00 PM>
"...huh? What's this?"
The seated Mareep looks over to the Farfetch'd, examining the pamphlet in his hand. It had SECT in big letters, abbreviating the name of summer tournament run by the PCA. The Farfetch'd, Kenji, holds it in her general direction. "Go on, take it."
The Mareep does so, looking through the pamphlet thoroughly. Kenji speaks up as she looks, leaning back on the bench as he does. "Sally, I would like you to participate in that tournament for the team's sake. It's an upcoming tournament, and I'm sure it'll help with the team's reputation."
The mareep keeps looking through the pamphlet, looking somewhat worried as she reaches halfway through the words inside. "Uh... it says here that it's for varying grades... I'm not going to have to face anyone like seniors... am I?"
Kenji shakes his head. "I honestly don't think so. I recall hearing a few instances from Hayate where they tried to prevent that kind of thing." He shrugs a bit as he starts to get up. "Either way, you can join it or not, though I would suggest you try. Hayate and I are going home in the summer, and there is no chance that Maple would make the cut, so you're our only option." He then starts to walk off. "So good luck on that."
"B-but..." But Sally didn't boost her voice, and Kenji soon walked into the distance and to the dorms. She sighs regretfully. "Well... I guess I can ask around for someone who knows more about it..."
<Sealight Family Abode, Sally's Room - Tuesday, 6:42 AM>
Having returned home and finished up her schoolwork early, Sally goes back to looking at the pamphlet she brought with her. She reads through it again before she hears a knock at the door and a voice, which she promptly looks in the direction of.
"Sally, it's dad!"
Sally blinks a bit, before shaking her head and breaking her focus on the pamphlet. "Oh, uh... come on in..."
The door opens, and in walks a hefty ampharos. He makes his way toward the mareep, smiling a little as he does. "So how was your day, Sally?"
Sally fidgets with her pamphlet a bit as she responds, seeming a little nervous. "Well... it was okay... classes went well enough, training with the team was okay as well... and... uh... yeah..."
Sally's father does make note of the pamphlet, however, and sticks his hand out, curious as to what it is. "Sally, let me see that for a second." Sally blinks, but slowly hands the pamphlet, which her father takes a few seconds to look over. "Hm... So you're going to be entering this?"
Sally fidgets a bit. "Well... uh, maybe... Is there something wrong about that?" However, her father shakes her head. "Wrong? There's nothing wrong!" His smile grows and he sets the pamphlet near Sally. "It's great to see you stepping forward for this kind of thing! Tell you what, if you win, I'll get you something nice, okay? And I'll try to make it to your matches, if I can arrange it."
Sally nods a bit, still a fair bit hesitant. Her father then starts walking out the door. "By the way, your mom's fixed up her usual pasta dish, so be ready for dinner soon!" Sally keeps silent, then grabs the pamphlet and dwells on it some more...
<Poké Combat Academy, Main Building Hallways - Wednesday, 12:03 PM>
The crowded halls are filled with people quickly making their way to the cafeteria for pizza day, and as such the area is full of kids pushing and making their way through. Sally, having been caught in the crowd, gets shifted around in the mess before she's sent out toward some of the lockers with an "Ooof..." and some sparks flying off her wool. She shakes her head a bit, then dusts herself off. She then starts off toward the cafeteria... before bumping right into someone. She stumbles back a bit in response and quickly apologizes. "Sorry! I didn't mean to do that..." She then looks up to see who it is, specifically a taller Farfetch'd student.
"Oh, hey, aren't you one of my bro's teammates? Sally, right? Don't worry about just earlier!" Sally blinks, but sighs in relief. "Er, sorry Yuichi... Well, I guess I should be going now..." She tries to sneak off but finds a leek on her shoulder. "I said don't worry about it, Sally! Besides, I want to ask you something. How has the team been faring? I can never get much out of Kenji, so think you can tell me a bit?"
Sally blinks, looking around a bit. "Well... not much... We had our last team battle a few days ago, since the school year's winding down and all... It went okay, I guess... And well..." Sally thinks back a bit, to the moment she got the SECT pamphlet. She fiddles around a bit and pulls the folded-up pamphlet out, showing it in Yuichi's direction. Yuichi looks it over for a second before his tone of voice changes. "...Kenji wants you to do THAT? Oh for crying out loud... Sally, you do know you don't have to do everything he says just because he's your team leader, right?"
Sally hesitates a bit, breaking from eye contact as she stutters a response. "W-w-well... I was thinking... er... what's wrong?"
Yuichi shakes his head a bit before explaining. "Look, let me just speak from experience here. You see, this tournament? When they say it's for all grades? They mean you have the chance to be up against ANYBODY from the school. Freshman, Junior, you name it. Anyone who enters has a chance of being your opponent. And I don't think you would make the cut."
Sally hesitates a bit more, but Yuichi seems to be waiting for an answer. She fidgets a bit, but manages to squeak out another response. "I... I... I want to do this for another reason..." Yuichi blinks, surprised by this turn of events. "Er, well, go on." Sally works up her composure, and continues. "Well... I also wand to do this... for my dad... You see, he's always working, and he seemed so happy when he was training me for battles... I just feel like I should try to do something back for him..."
Yuichi puts his wing to his beak, mulling over the situation. "Well... if you put it that way... Tell you what. Meet me at the gym after school. Get ready for some training!
<Poké Combat Academy, Gym - Wednesday, 3:32 PM>
Sally makes her way in, already decked out in her battle attire, and a slight ticking from her direction. Yuichi waves Sally over to an empty spot before he starts speaking. "Okay then! This is actually going to be pretty simple. This is a sparring match. All you have to do? Just strike me a few times. Make sure you don't hesitate!" Yuichi gains a grin on his face. Sally, however, still sems a fair bit hesitant. "A-are you sure? I mean, you're a junior, and well--"
Yuichi quickly speaks up, quieting Sally. "No excuses! If you're going to enter this, you're going to have to prepare yourself! Not just in body, but in mind as well!" The farfetch'd puts both wings on his leek, brandishing it as he faces Sally. "So then, are you ready?" Sally backs up a small bit before nodding. "Yeah..."
Yuichi grins again. "Okay then, let's begin!"
Sally make the first move as she uses a safeguard, shown by circles of light appearing, lowering down on her, and converging to give her a pinkish glow. However, Yuichi quickly moves in, swiping his leek at Sally horizontally and knocking her back. "You shouldn't leave yourself open like that!" Sally keeps quiet, making her way up. Once she manages to get on one knee, she puts her wrists together and spreads her hands out, sparking up a thunderbolt in Yuichi's direction. Yuichi jumps out of the way but winces as it manages to hit his left shoulder.
The ticking sound from Sally's vicinity starts to sound off louder as she makes it to her feet, while Yuichi swaps his leek to his right wing, running in to strike Sally once again. She makes an attempt to evade, though she takes a decent hit to her arm as she does. She winces and steps back as Yuichi makes another move, panting a bit before she lets loose another thunderbolt, sparking outward from her body in a defensive manner. Yuichi gets sent back from the shock, tumbling into a wall, although he manages to scramble to his feet. By the time he does, though, Sally has time to fire off an even stronger thunderbolt with another tick sounding off. Yuichi just barely manages to get out of the way looking over to where the thunderbolt struck the wall, before looking back to Sally with a slightly nervous look. "Okay, sparring's over for today!"
Sally blinks the very moment sparring is called off, then trembles a bit. She soon falls to her knees, panting as Yuichi comes closer. "Not bad... We're gonna need to keep at it next time, though! Your endurance and reaction time need a bit more fine-tuning, and you're looking a little too repetitive there! That first move you did there was the perfect example of an opening if you allow someone to strike you directly, and after that you just kept bolting like crazy... Though I gotta admit, that trick with the thunderbolt at close range was pretty good."
Sally shakes her head a bit. "Well, the reason I was using thunderbolt..." She fiddles around her outfit a bit before pulling out a pendant making a distinct ticking sound. "It's because of this... It's my dad's old item... You see, if I keep using the same move, it gets stronger, and, well..."
Yuichi interrupts while Sally hesitates. "So what is that doohickey anyhow? Some sort of metronome? Well, that's kinda kooky, but if it works for ya. Now then! Since you've gotten a light taste of what's up ahead, how about next time I actually try harder and use agility?" Sally's first response... is to fall from on-knees position to face-down. Yuichi shakes his head a bit. "Well Sally, I'm gonna keep cranking things up from here on out, so if you still want to join, then I'll keep training ya. In fact, I might teach you a few of my tricks. Sound good to you?" The farfetch'd looks down at Sally, who seems to be out of it. "Uh... yeah, we'll talk about that tomorrow. Maybe throw in a little psyche training too..."
<Poké Combat Academy, SECT Signup Booth - Monday, 2:47 PM>
Sally looks over the signup booth, looking a bit more determined than before as she approaches the booth. Yuichi follows from behind, saying a few words as Sally makes her way forward. "Okay Sally, I know the SECT's a few days away, but let's get signed up before it's too late, okay?" Sally nods slightly, as she starts to fill out the application. Yuichi peers from behind, talking over to one of the registration attendants. "You did come to watch her in action when I trained with her last time, right?" The attendant nods in approval, then as Sally finishes up, said attendant looks over her application. "Thank you for taking the time to register. We'll let you know if you're able to attend the Summer Exams Combat Tournament, so make sure to check when results are posted."
Sally nods, stating a simple "Thank you." before she and Yuichi went off toward the Gym.
"I have a chance to move forward with this, to make some progress towards my goal... To make something of myself for dad's sake... I can't back away now, I must keep trying... Keep trying so I can become a great battler..."
"...huh? What's this?"
