The mutagenic qualities of the Martian virus effect people differently. In the historic example of ex-Commander Immelmann, he witnessed an almost total conversion to the Martian form. Faren, however, sees much more of his original body remain.
Telorath and Xelorath can be seen as scientific "thugs" of the solar system, abducting other creatures and performing various strange experiments on them, but they do not do this without keeping in mind the great name of Science. The anti-gravity tube in which Faren is suspended is carefully monitoring his body, allowing the Martians to keep track of the virus as it changes him, hoping to unlock and decode more secrets of this ancient biological weapon.
