This will be my last new character for the year. His name is Soom like "moose" backwards, sort of. It's somewhat of an ananym.
Okay- the story behind the scar on his neck: when he was 5, he snuck out of his tent on a camping trip, and ate some mysterious berries. It turns out that those berries he was allergic to, so his throat swelled and it completely restricted his breathing. His mother saw this grave emergency so she cut his throat to allow him to breathe, which is called a tracheostomy. This traumatic experience has deeply affected Soom. In his opinion, he thinks that it's so stupid that a need like breathing could have ended his life so suddenly. Thus, he has this inner goal to hold his breath as long as possible, improving by half a minute every year. So far, his record is 9 minutes. He's not mean, but he's extremely focused and serious about what he does.
My inspiration for this character was an interesting one. 2020 was a seriously difficult year for me, as I'm sure for all of us. But it's not the hardest year I've encountered; 2018 was. I just thought of all that I've been through and I want to express that in one character. Also, I can sort of speak for this character from my experiences of having asthma; not breathing will kill you the fastest, faster than not eating, drinking, or sleeping. In one way, I think it's ridiculous, but on the other hand, I accept that this is what I have to deal with, and reality is the way it is. And yes, I was inspired by David Blaine.
I seriously enjoyed making this character, because I've never made on with a scar, in all 13 years of doing so. Also, it worked out that actual moose can hold their breath for only 30 seconds.
