From what I gathered from the description I was given, they were attacked by the dragon. Once they beat it, they only discovered it had an egg after a successful investigation check.

The warlock adopted the baby dragon some time later.

That would probably be up to them.

Percy (the half-elf warlock) is adopted too, so he's got the most experience in that department I reckon.

I've read enough stories of Chromatic Dragons becoming good to know that its possible to turn the adopted young dragon into a good creature.
