I must say, I don't have nearly as many lions in this gallery as I would like to. This photo was taken at Chiang Mai Zoo in Thailand.
Male lions live a very precarious life, one of reign and ruin. One fit enough to survive adolesence will leave the pride in which they will born and seek out their own. They will spend time as loners, often in an unfriendly landscape, living by the bloody tooth and claw. If they are strong enough, they will fight other males and usurp the role of pasha in a pride. It is then they will sire their own cubs and perpetuate their genetic legacy. Their reign however, whether brief or broad, will eventually come to an end. A new, fitter male will always be waiting on the horizon to challenge them. If they are not killed by a new challenger, they will be forced out of the pride. In an old and weakened state, the former king will then fall victim to the kingdom they once reigned. Like a ghost, they will fade away, swallowed up by the land and the cycle begins anew.
“The dead are not lost forever. They are the storm on the wind, they are the sudden brightness in the sky, they are the earth, they are the air… the dead are not dead.”
-Jeremy Irons (Ultimate Enemies)

some years ago, I found an unconfirmed story about a male lion soemwhere in africa who ruled his pride for many years on end. in the cool morning hours he would make the whole pride get up and kog a few rounds around their rock and he himself would add extra rounds until he flopped breathing heavily. he would eat last on any prey, and was said to be around 40 years old already. people claimed a human's spirit would be reborn in that lion's body.
I doubt this story is true, but you never know. it sounds fascinating, though; usually pride pashas last some 5 years before they are 'replaced'. this lion would have outlasted that time span several times...

Not to mention the lifespan of a lion in the wild can be around 12 years... 20 in captivity when well cared for...25 if care is exceptional combined with luck. The latter is extremely rare and that's in captivity. I think to say I am skeptical of that story (particularly if the lion ate last at a meal, which is asking for an early exit) is a gargantuan understatement.
Nice story nonetheless. =P
